Bucky POV:
As soon as Sophie returned, the entire team was there and ready to ask about her day. However, she ignored everyone in favor of taking her backpack back to her room. When she came back, she sat in the living room and said "You have questions." It was a statement.
"Yup." Nat said, smirking a bit at the observance.
"Let's turn it into a game. Everybody gets to ask one question, and at the end I'll ask one to all of you. It can be silly, serious, whatever, just the first question you ask is your only one."
Clint nodded, then replied to Sophie, "Deal. I want to know if you've ever been arrested."
Sophie shook her head. "Nope. I never actually stole from people, instead I stole their possessions back and returned them. People are willing to pay a few bucks as a thank you for rescuing their stuff."
That was something I could never do. How skilled was she, if she stole from thieves?
Loki went next. "Have you ever messed with someone just for fun?"
Sophie smiled maliciously. "Yup. Some were just harmless pranks, but I am not at all against causing trouble for Karens, homophobes, racists, et cetera."
Troubling. If she and Clint teamed up, I would have to fear for my life.
Nat went next. "Do you have some sort of fight training?"
"I mess around with learning all sorts of defense, and I know a few preemptive attack styles."
Bruce asked "When did you last have a checkup?"
She winced, then replied "When I was eleven. I left when I was twelve, a bit before the annual checkup we had scheduled."
She's sixteen. My boyfriend and Bruce are now having joint breakdowns and I'm worried too.
My turn.
Where should I start?
"What's your favorite hobby?"
"Exploring," she shrugged. "It's really hard for me to find stuff that keeps me busy. I have a photographic memory and way too much time because I have the world's most insane sleep schedule. Meaning I have way too many random skills I learned after midnight and get bored easily, the reason I'm in a Montessori."
Clint blinked, then said "Pretend you're explaining what a montessori is to an idiot."
Laughing, she replied "A Montessori school is a freer way of education. The classes are mixed ages, and the teachers are more guides than overlords. We're allowed to do a lot of free exploring, as long as it's educational. It works really well for kids who are motivated to learn, like this one kid who is always in the corner with the first aid kit. Probably going into medical school."
I have no words. Wait, is she smarter than Stark?
"Probably. I mean, I was messing around once and I created a taser-pen capable of stunning a rhino. It stores energy from movement, and since it's clipped to my keychain it moves a lot."
Aw. I said that out loud. Thor, Wanda and Vision all asked random questions about baking skills (I love baking!), book preferences (Fantasy, romance but not the awkward kind), and if AI should be able to vote (They'd be better at it than most people, so it's idiotic to say they can't).
During his turn, Steve asked "What's the weirdest thing you've seen in San Diego?"
Thinking for a minute, she finally said "There was this one lady who could be found holding summoning ceremonies outside random businesses and buildings to bring demons. And it looked like she was wearing a jacket made of live cats."
I was internally going WTF, but Tony was being extremely vocal about it. Steve looked ready to kill. "ANY-ways, moving on. Tony, since you're SO enthusiastic about this, it's your turn." Murder, averted.
Tony smirked, then asked "Do you know what happened to the people who were taking care of you?"
Never mind. I'm gonna kill him myself, with my bare hands. Sophie shot me a look that said Murder is illegal don't kill him for me. Or he's mine to gut, Baba. Either way, I tried to get a hold on my anger.
"Well, STARK" she said, venom laced thickly into her words. "They left the country and changed their names after disowning me. They let me collect my belongings, then chased me out of the house with thrown objects and curses. I believe my step-sister called me, and I quote 'a demon straight from nerdy hell'."
I'm not crying, I'm not crying, this is eye sweat. Okay, I'm barely holding back my tears. I will kill him in his sleep for bringing this up, and I know that there are several others who will help. Maybe I'll even call Stephen back from that convention to chew him out.
Sophie straightened, then said "It's fine. They were becoming too toxic, so good riddance."
(A/N I know that her family is AMAZING but this AU Amy and the rest of the Fosters were her friend and her friend's family. Amy WILL show up and they will be friends again. Shuri will enlist Amy to keep Sophie safe (not jealous/rivalry, Sophie and Amy see each other as sisters.))
Shaking her head, likely to clear thoughts, she asked "If you could be any inanimate object, what would you be?"
Tony answered "A globe because I'm as straight as one"
Vision and Wanda both wanted to be AI's (I'm already one, author! Stop breaking the fourth wall, Vision!)
Nat looked at Tony, then said "I'd want to be a knife so I can have a hand in Tony's death."
Thor wanted to be a poptart, Loki deadly nightshade, Clint an arrow, and Bruce a heart monitor.
What would I want to be? Maybe a book. "A book, because I could tell stories and knock people unconscious."
Steve smiled, then said "A journal, because I like helping people sort out issues." That was so sweet I had to hide my blush.
Sophie took a deep breath, then said "I'd be a pendulum, because I swing both ways. BI!!"
Standing, she ran from the room, and I heard the door slam a few seconds later.
Tony was the first to speak. "What the everloving BLEEP was that?" I smirked at Friday's interference, because that was just too good.
"That," Loki said, sporting a full blown smile, "Was one of the most AMAZING ways to come out, like, EVER."
Somehow, Tony was still confused. "She just told us she was Bi, Tony. She likes both girls and guys." Nat said, one million percent done with his ignorance.
Steve stood, and I moved to follow him. "We're going to go make sure she knows we figured it out and we're okay with it. If her previous family were that mean to her, she's probably super terrified after this conversation. Also, I'm killing you with my shield, Stark."
Time to make sure our daughter is okay.
Yup. I decided that there will be no homophobic Avengers, because they are heroes and heroes accept all identities! That being said, I thought of this way of coming out and it just clicked. So, the chapter is longer than most.
Galaxy, out!
