Sophie POV:

Steve Rodgers. As in, Captain America, Steve Rodgers. I pulled up all of the mental files on him, skimming it slightly. When Bucky asked me what I wanted, I glanced over the menu before saying "I'll take an apple pie fritter and some milk, please."

I knew as soon as I saw Steve pull his wallet out that it was useless to fight him on paying. Mrs. Snow tried, but I interrupted her protests. "He's not gonna budge, Mrs. Snow. If we keep arguing here I will go hangry and when I get hangry bad stuff happens."

Not technically a lie. Getting hungry makes it hard for me, what with my powers.

Powers that, for the most part, have nothing to do with the superhuman serum. If I got bitten by a freaking radioactive zoo, I'm gonna scream. Actually, screaming just sounds good in general.

I had luckily put myself in autopilot, following the two huge dudes to a corner in the cozy cafe. Why were they both so much taller than me? Scratch that, almost everybody near my age or older was taller than me.

The two soldiers sat on one of the couches, and I moved to curl up in this hanging pod thing. Interesting. They seemed to be tracking what I was doing, watching my every move and analyzing my personality.

When the food came, I decided to see how much they were paying attention. First, the distraction. I reached back to pull my hair out of its scrunchie, slipping the fabric over my wrist and allowing my hair to cascade over my shoulder. Now they know I'm a blonde. Next, the action. I reached over, took a bite of the fritter, put it back on the plate, and began to drum my fingers on the table.

To anyone not paying attention, it would look like I was just bored of listening to Mrs. Snow talk adult. The old lady who ran the store would never know that not only was I filing the adult conversation in my head, I was also sending a morse code message, tapping it out over and over again.

Please stop trying to evaluate me. If you want to know about me, ask, because trust me you won't be able to learn much just from watching. Over, and over, and over again.

Finally, FINALLY Bucky's eyes widened. He turned to Steve, the dude who's apparently my dad, and whispered in his ear. Me being me, I heard him say "She's sending us a morse code message, Steve. She knows we were analyzing her."

I tapped quickly And also, SHE can hear you.

They both flushed, then turned to her.

"So, Sophie, how's the fritter?" Steve asked awkwardly.

I knew that wasn't what he wanted to ask, so I called him out on it. "The fritter's good" then I said "Please stop beating around the bush. If you want to ask me about my poop-er-riffic  life, ask me about my poop-er-riffic life but don't do the sad pity while trying to figure stuff out thing, because it makes me want to unalive things."

The face changes were epic. Sophie noticed that Bucky was holding back a snicker. "Go ahead and laugh, that was supposed to be funny."

He let it out, and I smiled up at the laughing man. Maybe Foster's Law will give me a freaking break, at least for now. "Did you seriously say unalive?" he guffawed.

Steve looked at him, then back at me. "Is that really the thing that jumped out at you the most?" I asked, throwing back my head in a laugh. I reached out and took another bite of the still-warm pastry, but paused in my chewing when I noticed them staring at me. Was my nose bleeding? No. I continued chewing confusedly, while they just stared.

Finally, Steve broke the silence by asking a bunch more questions. I answered them as best I could, then zoned out while they began talking to Mrs. Snow again. My ears zoomed back in when they said 'adoption'.
