Chapter Thirty Nine- Everything Going Wrong

I got an early text from Barry in the morning.

Hey, Gabz. Piece of advice for the future- don't date two guys and end up breaking both of their hearts.
~Barry

Ouch. That kind of hurt. Normally, I get texts from Barry with x's on the end as well but there was no x's today. Wait...Why am I upset that he isn't sending me x's or hearts? He's not even my boyfriend. Mixed feelings are so confusing.

I decided, for once, to reply for his benefit.

I'm sorry. I'm just feeling confused about how I feel about you and how I feel about Hector. You know, like in a romantic way.

Instantly, about two minutes later, I got another text back from Barry.

Are you saying you still might have feelings for me...?
~Barry x

Well, at least he sent an x this time. I replied back.

I'd rather not tell you over text if you know what I mean. See you in school.

I helplessly shut my phone and prepared for school. As I arrived, Barry was nowhere to be seen. That is until I heard the familiar beeping of Barry's convertible.

"Get in", Barry ordered, gesturing to the seat next to him in the car.

I didn't hesitate to get in the car. He drove us into nowhere.

"Where are we going?" I asked nervously.

"Just driving until you tell me exactly what is going on in that pretty, little head of yours", Barry smiled at me whilst still driving, "So, start from the exact beginning".

"Well, I was born-" I began jokily.

"Don't be clever", Barry laughed, "You know what I mean".

"Okay", I nodded, "Well, everything was going so well with Hector at first. The thrill of sneaking around was exhilarating. But then I felt someone more for him than just a school girl attraction...love".

I saw Barry roll his eyes out of the corner of my eye.

"Then, when he started ignoring me-" I continued, "-Well, you were there for me. That's when I kind of started feeling...the way I feel".

"That's the thing", Barry sighed, "I don't know what you're feeling".

"Neither do I", I sighed too, "Well, I have a rough idea. Anyway, you have no idea how hard it is to resist you. I'm going to be completely honest with you, okay? I like you. I like you a lot. There is two reasons that I can't be with you though. One is the fact that I am with Hector and I really do love him".

Barry nodded sadly.

"You know, maybe you two just weren't meant to be", Barry said, "You don't have to stay with him".

"I know", I agreed, "But I'm scared. The second reason why I can't be with you is...well, it's kind of complicated. I'm afraid that if I finish with Hector, I'll lose everything. I know you. I know who you used to be as well. And, yes, you've changed a lot and in a good way. But, no offense, but you strike me as a player if I'm honest. So, if you finally have me, you'll eventually get bored of me and leave me".

"You've got it all wrong", Barry shook his head, "I'm not a player. Well, I used to be but I am not that person anymore. Just please give me a chance".

"I can't", I said, "That's what I needed to tell you. That's all I needed to say so can we just go back to Waterloo Road, please?"

Barry took a while to answer before his expression turned angry.

"No", Barry simply replied.

"Just turn around!" I argued, trying to grab the steering wheel.

We fought over the wheel for a few seconds until I finally got hold of it. I tried to steer the direction back to Waterloo Road.

"Gabriella, get off!" Barry yelled.

I didn't listen. Barry tried to push me away but I kept steering. I couldn't see anything as my hair was in my face from the wind and the fighting. Everything was happening so quickly. I heard the horns of cars beeping at us to drive more safely.

Suddenly, I heard the squeal of breaks and Barry shouting. Then, I felt a massive thud and pain hit me everywhere.

My vision blurred and I felt my head go dizzy. Then, everything went dark and my eyes slowly closed...
