I hear beeping around me. Where am I? Why is everything black? I feel a presence beside me but no matter how hard I try, I can't open my eyes. I start moving my hands around to feel. I feel a guy at my side. Why can't I open my eyes?
I start thrashing around trying to figure out my surroundings. "Woah, easy Blake. You're okay." I hear Carter's voice as he grabs my hands to keep my still.
"Cay Cay." I whimper as I calm down. "Why can't I see?" I ask in a panicked voice.
"Y-you can't see?" He asks in a confused voice.
"No. It's black. Are my eyes covered?" I ask quietly.
"Blake I'm looking right in your eyes. They are wide open." He states. I start to panic again. "Don't panic. I'm calling the nurses in." He holds me tightly to keep me calm.
"Ah it's good to see that you are awake Miss Coleman." I hear a guys voice who I'm guessing is the doctor.
"Why can't she see?" Carter speaks up before I can.
"We are going to have to take her for more testing. We originally didn't see anything in the X-rays that would cause this. My guess is she hit the back of her head which can cause blindness." The doctor says and I have to make sure I heard him right.
"I'm blind?" I whisper out.
"Like I said, I need to run some more tests and do an MRI. It's more than likely a temporary blindness that will go away within a few days. I won't know for sure until we get your scans." With that I shut up and didn't say anything else. Carter held my hand as they wheeled me down the hallway. He told me where I was going and narrated everything that I couldn't see. I wondered where mom and dad was but I figured they were at the house sleeping. I wasn't sure how long I'd been in here or what exactly happened but from what the doctor said, I had gathered that I had fallen and hit my head.
Carter had left a while ago, I heard nurses and doctors scattering around as they did their jobs. I was sure I had already had all the scans. I guess now they are taking me back to my room. I wasn't sure of any of this because none of them were talking to me and I had already told myself that I wasn't talking until I could see who exactly I was talking too.
I heard a door creak and then I felt the bed come to a stop. "Oh my baby! I'm so glad you are okay. I'm sorry I wasn't here when you woke up. We were at the hotel getting some rest." I felt a kiss on my forehead which I knew must be from my mom.
"How are you feeling kiddo?" I feel a strong grip on my shoulder and I know it's my dad. I still stay silent. I don't have much of a reasoning to not talk other than I feel like I shouldn't. It's like I'm stuck in this new black world when everyone else is in the color filled one. It feels like I'm all alone in my thoughts.
"She hasn't been talking dad." I hear Carter say quietly.
"Did you tell her what happened to her?" My dad questions and I instantly perk up. I struggle but manage to sit up some on the bed to show that I want to know.
"She's blind, not deaf. We weren't going to tell her yet." My mom advises him. Weren't going to tell me what? Why is it such a secret as to why I'm in here? Im a klutz, surely I just fell and hit my head on something. It wouldn't be the first time and probably not the last.
"Listen Blake, I know you are probably wondering what we are talking about. We are going to tell you everything, just remember that we all love you." Carter's voice sounds closer so I'm assuming they are all standing around my bed. I now know that it was more than just a fall.
"Sweetie, you were at a race with your dad, brother and uncle. I'm not sure if you remember that or not but that's where you were. The race track was a new one that's a couple hours from home. You sat with Carter in the stands but got cold so you went to get a hoodie from the trailer. Along the way something happened." I hear my moms voice break and she stops talking.
