Chapter Nine
Shaelynn's Perspective
"Here are the rules. No hiding in the hideout, not in another territory, or in the sky. Which means that fairy dust is off limits, you understand?" Jacob explained to us, and we nodded our heads assuringly. "Right then, Ben your it, and whoever you tag first is it then. Start counting to a hundred now, and we go!"
"Tag? What kind of hide and seek is this?" I asked them as they sprinted away as fast as they could and disappeared into the trees.
"Seventeen, eighteen, nineteen..." Jacob continued to name off numbers while ignoring my question.
I shook my head, giving up on getting an answer and starting to run away into the bushes on my left before a hundred came. The trees whistling in the cool air was all I could hear as I searched for a place to hide from Jacob.
When I awoke this morning, I was told that the lost boys would take me out for a day of fun in Neverland while Peter took care of some business. I assumed he meant business involving Dread which brought out the worst mood in Peter, so I decided not to speak up on it.
Besides, this game was a great way to explore around Neverland, which I hadn't done a lot of since arriving. I just had to make sure that I didn't venture into another territory.
I was light on my feet as I tried to quietly make my way through the leaves. The crunching sound of each footstep didn't help me act scarce.
"May?" I heard my name whispered from close by. It didn't sound like Jacob because it was a younger voice, so I assumed that it was the smaller boy.
"Is that you Oliver?"
My question was answered when the youngest lost boy stepped out of a nearby bush. "Would you like to hide with me?"
Oliver's eyes were wide with hope, as he held his hands together in front of him in plea. I could tell he thought of me as a good friend already just by reading his expression. "Okay. Where did you have I mind?"
He grabbed my hand and started pulling me in the direction of his choice. We were getting closer to shore, but stayed close enough to the trees that we wouldn't be an easy find.
"Oli? I know you're out there!" We heard another boy call into the forest and echo. He glanced back with concern and began to rush towards a slit in a rock wall. The opening was large enough for a human to fit through, and we easily got to the other side. He kept on his way, now free of my hand. Oliver climbed a secure pile of large rocks to get to the top.
I tried to follow, grabbing on to the edges of the sharper stones. My foot suddenly slipped, and I almost came tumbling down. Taking a breath and readying myself, I climbed rock by rock to the very top by Oliver.
I studied the setting of which we were in, noticing how dark and dull it was. there was a gigantic skull head made of stone in the very middle of the back wall. it was surrounded with dirty water full of bones and unknown. "What is this place?"
"Its called Skull Rock." Oliver answered, and pointed to the skull head for more explanation. "I'd say the gloomiest place of Neverland."
It was quiet and barren, so I could easily see why it was gloomy. Although, it wasn't so scary to me. At the most, it was mysterious. Skull Rock made me want to write a story about how uniquely horrific it could be.
A clack and a rustle echoed through the cave-like structure, and in came Jacob. "I've got you now Oliver! You always hide here!"
I looked at little Oliver's face in disbelief, knowing now that we would be found. He shrugged his shoulders guiltily, and began to move east. "Where are you going?"
