Chapter Twenty Nine
Shaelynn's point of view
The sky was beautiful as I flew through the clouds. The stars were as bright as ever; or maybe it only seemed so because of how I felt. Flying back to Neverland, back to Peter Pan; gave me a feeling I couldn't ever explain.
Well I guess I could. I could call it happiness.
However, that's not what you could say Neverland looked like from the skies. It looked gloomy and depressing, striking a chord in my heart.
"Why is it so different here?" I asked the boys. This was not the Neverland I remembered.
I saw Danny roll his eyes before he answered. "There are rumors. But they're a far-fetched coincidence if you ask me."
Ben shoved Danny in the arm and Jacob came to fly next to Oliver and I. "Neverland is very much influenced by Peter Pan's feelings and actions. Whatever Peter's feeling, that's what the island feels as well."
This definitely shifted my mood.
Oliver frowned. "Peter Pan is angry."
Jacob and I exchanged glances and continued to fly silently.
Peter Pan wasn't angry. Peter Pan was sad.
Soon we were close to ground, and Oliver and I held hands as we landed. I soon noticed we were near mermaid lagoon, as I saw mermaids dive into the waters at our breach.
"Good. I don't think we've been seen." Danny points and leads the way. "Head to the hideout."
I found it weird that the Lost Boys would let him speak so orderly, especially Ben because he was so overly loyal to Peter Pan. Then I rationalized that that must be how much Peter means to them. They are willing to work with someone they despise to get him back to his old, happy self.
Moments later, we arrive inside the hideout expecting to see Peter Pan. The hideout is not quite the same as well. It's quiet and cold, like it hasn't been attended to in a while.
We search the room, but Peter Pan is nowhere to be seen. Not even Tinkerbell lays in her usual spot.
Jacob is first to speak. "He's usually here, or exploring the lagoon with Tink."
"But we were just there and we didn't see him." I point out, squeezing my hands together with anticipation. Something didn't feel right.
Ben shrugs. "We could wait for him to return?"
No one comments, and I assume that's what we will do. I sit with a sigh. Was this a good idea after all?
Danny begins approaching Peter's hammock, but Ben is quick to object. "You're not welcome there, traitor! That's Peter's corner!"
Danny waves him off. "Take it easy, Hothead, and take a look." He picks up an object from the bed, and it's revealed as a medallion.
"What is that?" Jacob grabs it and inspects it with scrunched eyes.
Danny smoothed his hair back with an unhappy sigh. "I've seen it before. And I know who it belongs to."
I turn my head at Ben's groan as he swipes everything off a tree stub table in anger.
"Captain Hook." I announce what everyone is thinking. "He left that there on purpose, didn't he?"
By the look on Danny's face, I have my answer. "He wants us to go after him."
Ben is rubbing his fists in a rage. "Why should we do anything that bastard wants, anyways!"
Jacob throws his arms out. "Because he has Peter! There's no other way!"
I close my eyes, imagining Hook taking Peter Pan captive. It was my fault. Peter was weak and easy to capture, and it was all my fault. We had to save him; I did.
"Get ready to battle, boys." I grab one of the swords from the wall and inspect it for good measure. "The tables have turned, and it's time for us to save Peter."
"Don't be so gullible, May. Hook has a whole crew ready to get us as soon as we set foot on that blasted ship. None of us, especially you, are in the position of fighting them off." He arches an eyebrow and eyes my scrawny arms.
I look at the lost boys, who don't seem so eager to join me as well.
I step onto a stool and address them. "There is no other option. It's either we go defend Peter Pan and at least try, or we surrender ourselves and accept whatever consequences Hook gives us; because believe me, we do not stand a chance without Peter Pan."
It's silent, before Jacob finally speaks up. "Peter Pan's done so much for us, and we owe it to him to give it our best."
The other Lost Boys murmur in agreement. Danny chews his lip before adding, "I'm in for anything ending in Hook's demise."
Oliver joins me in grabbing a weapon. Ben gives me an approving smile, and the others join in getting equipped as well. I look to Danny, who already has a knife in hand, and looks back at me, impressed.
"I just have one concern..." He chimes in, and everyone turns to face him. "There is still no way in hell we are going to be able to fight off Hook's whole crew, no matter how powerful a speech you give us."
My smile doesn't falter, because I knew something he hadn't thought of. "We have Peter Pan on our side. Once we release him, fate is on our side."
Everyone nods in agreement, and soon we are cheering. We are battle roaring; ready to win this fight once and for all.
