As night fell, Mason knew he had to find Kaura. He wanted to push the thought of Jade as far away from his mind as possible. She was crazy as a human but as a vampire...God, he hoped she wasn't causing too much trouble.
He scavenged the hall, trying to pick up on her scent but he couldn't pin it yet. Just as he was turning a corner, a figure emerged beside him and grabbed his arm with persistence. Mason growled and turned to the person--only to find Vincent standing there with a speculating expression. The two stood in front of each other, staring. Eventually, the teacher dropped his arm and continued on his way.
Mason glanced at his arm, narrowing his eyes. More weird vibes from the new teachers. He shrugged it off and managed to find Kaura in front of Davina's door, waving at the teacher. He caught up with her, pulling Kaura close to his body. "What was that about? Why are you talking to Davina?"
"Weren't you listening? She's helping me with my magic," Kaura muttered as they made their way to her room.
Once he shut the door behind them, Mason sighed and fully faced her. "I'm sorry about what I said and how I said it. I didn't mean to make it seem like you were crazy. I just wanted to help you."
"I understand," she shrugged as she got ready for bed. Mason watched as she zigzagged throughout the room and he simply took off his shirt and jumped on her bed.
Eventually, she followed him and they nestled into each other's arms. Mason sighed, resting his cheek against her shoulder. "You know, I could get used to this."
"Really? Just this? I'm pretty sure you enjoy the sex as well."
"Don't act as though it's one-sided," he mused. "The sex is phenomenal." Kaura shook her head with disbelief and they stayed in comfortable silence until Mason cleared his throat. "Jade Patel."
Kaura turned to him with question. "Yeah, she's one of the new students."
"Remember...remember when I told you how I turned?" He said slowly.
Kaura didn't respond, trying to find out how the new student connected to the car crash. Then her eyes widened to the size of watermelons. "She's Jade Jade. Crazy cheating ex Jade."
"Yeah, that Jade and knowing her, she's going to try and sabotage what we have in any way possible," he said. "I'm worried about what she's going to do when she crosses paths with you."
Kaura chuckled, standing up to sit at her desk to work on homework. "Don't worry about me, baby. You and I both know she's the one who needs the concern. I really don't want to deal with drama this year."
He nodded and placed his hands behind his back. "I've actually been meaning to tell you. You know how I said Davina was looking at me weird? Vincent did the same thing too."
Kaura slowly turned to him, eyes narrowed. "What type of weird?"
He shrugged. "I don't know, the type of weird that makes you feel like you're some sort of unknown creature." Mason watched her features form into a calculated one and he sat up. "What?"
"I don't know why but I trust Vincent. He has more experience and it might have to do with the revival spell I did on you," she said and sighed with exhaustion. "We should go talk to them right now."
Mason didn't say much to argue so he followed her out into the hallway. It didn't take long to find both teachers talking to each other in Vincent's room and when Kaura walked in, they smiled. "Hello, again," Davina greeted.
Kaura nodded, waiting for Mason to shut the doors behind them before saying, "Mason tells me that you guys are sending him concerning signals?"
Both witches turned to look at each other, speaking with their eyes. Vincent finally cleared his throat and took slow steps towards the duo, keeping his eyes trained on the vampire. "My Initial Conjuration is sensing something unbalanced about your boy."
"It can do that?" Kaura asked with pure interest and shock. "Detect bad magic?"
Davina nodded. "With time, you'll learn how to notice it too."
Vincent began to circle Mason and Kaura swallowed. "I did a revival spell on Mason last year. I think that's what you're sensing."
Vincent stopped moving and turned to Kaura. "What was the price of the spell?"
"I've been trying to figure that out. I assumed there was no price if it wasn't physically or mentally evident," Kaura shrugged.
He laughed with genuine amusement. "The number of times I've said this. There's always a price with magic. Always."
"So..." Mason said. "Can you tell me what's wrong so that I can head to bed?"
Davina sighed, straightening herself. "We certainly can."

Mason wasn't sure what the witches were doing but from reading their faces, he knew it wasn't good. Kaura gathered ingredients while the teachers set up the spell and before he knew it, he was standing in a circle of candles and flowers.
"You ready to touch that foreign part of your magic for the first time?" Davina grinned at the little witch. Kaura nodded eagerly as they began to link hands.
"Just follow our lead," Vincent instructed and began. "Détecter la mauvaise magie."
"Détecter la mauvaise magie," Davina said and the candles began to flicker.
"Détecter la mauvaise magie," Kaura recited and the room suddenly turned cold. As she chanted, she could feel a heavy pressure push into the room. She could see a light at the back of her eyelids and somehow, this spell felt more powerful than any of her others. It felt rawer, more natural. "Détecter la mauvaise magie."
"Don't try to explore," Davina instructed. "The magic will guide you, it will tell you what it needs to tell you."
Kaura clenched their connected hands and continued to chant the spell. But like lightning, the candles were swept out the room and she could feel her body absorb the heat of it. She gasped as her eyes flew open and Vincent and Davina dropped their hands.
They looked at each other. "As I expected."
Mason was still in the circle, confused. "What? What did you see?"
Davina sighed. "When Kaura brought you back, you didn't return as just a vampire."
Kaura narrowed her eyes. "What does that mean?"
"It means that Mr. Hayes is one from two species," Vincent informed. "A hybrid, a vampire and a werewolf."
