Juilliard University, NY, 2021

Melanie's POV:
I suddenly wake up because of some noises I can't identify. I manage to look at the clock, it's 5 am, and also see that Fiona and Julie aren't in their beds so something's going on.

I yawn and sit up. It's then that I realize it's the 4th April, my birthday. Fiona enters with a shocked face like if me waking up wasn't part of the plan and she has to improvise.

"Oh good morning, I'm sorry that we woke you up. Just go back to sleep." She adds a nervous smile and quickly leaves the room.

Yeah as if I believe you that you forgot my birthday and that you're not preparing something right now. I don't want to ruin anything so I just shake my head laughing and go back to sleep.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOUU, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOUUU"
I open my eyes and see the girls with a stack of delicious pancakes on a plate with candles.

"HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR MELANIE, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOUUU!"
I can't stop smiling, I have the best besties on earth.
I blow out the candles and hug them tightly.

"Awww thank you both so much, I knew you were planning something! I love you."

"We love you too. Come on out of bed, this wasn't everything."
Julie does a cute little dance to hype me up and when we reach the kitchen,
I'm stunned. They made such a big breakfast only for my birthday.

"Oh my God, not only pancakes but fresh fruits, croissants, toasts,
smoothie bowls and lots of different beverages. I appreciate it so so so much!"
I give them another quick hug and we sit down to enjoy our morning together.
It's already the best birthday I can imagine.

"Oh yeah girls I thought of throwing a bit a bigger party with friends
from Juilliard and the boys tonight. Will you help me organize everything?"

They look at each other and start laughing out loud. Why is this funny?

"Babe you won't do anything, we have your whole day
planned and I give you a tip: we won't stay here tonight."

"Of course you did, you're Fiona." I smile with appreciation and much
excitement. "I don't know how to thank you enough for everything you do for me."

"You don't have to. Seeing you happy is enough in return for me...
Now go chance your clothes and make yourself ready to leave.
We have a long journey ahead of us."

I put my plate etc. away and quickly help Julie clean the kitchen.
"Well, do I need something in particular? My pyjamas at least I guess."

"What do you think we did at 5 am? I packed your whole suitcase
so you don't have to worry about anything, just enjoy it."

I look at her with big glassy eyes. "How do I deserve you? I must
make you the best birthday as well and that's already a lot of pressure."

I tie my hair up, brush my teeth and put on some comfy cargo pants with an oversized shirt. Definitely best to travel, of course I will look a bit fancier tonight.

In the car I can't help my curiosity and ask every few minutes where we're going. I guess I'm annoying like a 3-year-old, oops. Suddenly Fiona takes the freeway exit in direction to the airport.

"No way, we are flying? I haven't been anywhere further away for such a long time." My excitement grows even bigger but that fades away a bit when I see how many people are at the airport. We will have to wait for a long time.
