Big Bear Lake, CA, 2021

Fiona's POV:

The trees around us blow in the wind and you can hear the leaves blowing across the ground. It is actually the most beautiful time of the day. Better said, simply the coolest. The last few days have been very hot, so that it is almost impossible to sit in the sun at midday.

A short crack of a branch wakes me up briefly, but I don't think any further and fall asleep again immediately after a few seconds. The last few days have been so eventful and exhausting that it is good to come down a bit here in nature. You can just enjoy it out here.

But my wish is over sooner than I thought...

"MOORRNIINNNGGG" three boys yell through the forest and shake our
tent as if an earthquake were raging.

"No, not today...", I mutter to myself

"Too late, sorry little sis", Alex answers.

"What the hell?!" complains Julie who is visibly startled sitting up.

"Wake up call for our girls," Luke answers her, looking deep into my eyes at the word 'our'.

Typical as I am, my gaze breaks away from his eyes at the speed of light. Too awkward such a moment.

"Haven't we earned our beauty sleep?", Melanie asks

"Oh, you don't need it," Reggie winks at her.

"Omg... not that bad," Melanie shakes her head and smiles slightly.

I open my sleeping bag and crawl out of the tent. My gut tells me I look like I haven't showered in three days. My bun, which I made yesterday to sleep in, is no longer the way it should be. It also makes sense how restless I slept. If I'd counted my revolutions, I'd probably be in the millions by now.

I make my way to the shore of the lake and enjoy the morning air and the light vibrations moving the water. It's as if I can recharge my batteries here.It is exactly how freedom is described.

"It's almost like it used to be...", Alex appears behind me.

"Yeah... annual camping trip, isn't it?"

"Sunscreen, mosquitoes and Mr Oliver's ice cream van."

"There's no better way to describe it."

"I would have loved to have experienced it with all of us. Imagine if we
had built our sandcastles together and then destroyed them again."

"I think that would have caused our parents to separate us from arguing more often."

"Well, I couldn't have let your sandcastle be better."

Reggie comes to inform the two of us that breakfast is ready. Unfortunately, it's not as great a breakfast as it was at Disneyland, but what can you expect? The boys even went out in the morning to look for berries. And they always say that it's the will that counts.

"Actually, I think I'll go for a swim in the lake first to wake up before I eat anything. "

I put on my bikini and hurry, because the wind makes it quite draughty just in so little clothing.

The touch of the water makes my hairs stand up all over my body. My body immediately reacts to the cold of the water and I notice how it begins to heat up my body. Long breaths make the coldness of the water better after the first few minutes. Yep, now I'm awake.
