you said forever

april petals are falling,
breezes of wind are stalling us,
from stating the unexpected obvious.
met you because of a mistake,
i was hoping for a retake,
because i'm not truly what you want.

i know that this ethereal entwining
is only one-sided,
still, i can feel your magic,
and bursts of beautiful blissfulness,
which we kept to ourselves.
these things break easily, and
they don't wash out quickly,
so i locked it inside of your brother's mason jar,
along with our fireflies from the summer before.
you were never going to stay.

and when october settles in
the memories of you will be
rooted deep into my skin.
and i'll be forced to leave them,
incarcerated, as if the essence of
whom we were, will not always be
trapped in me, struggling to breathe,
hoping to gasp up for air, before making a great escape,
haunting and eating me up,
like that record which i never could
remember what it's name was,
and the guilt and the flashbacks,
and all of our promises,
were they empty? or were they honest?
how can you leave me like that old sweater,
from the very first night? you said that
you didn't need it anymore.

you said forever and buried the lie, where i couldn't find it.
you said forever, but we were never meant for it.
you said forever, and i still love you for it.
