A single strand of my auburn hair fell loose over my eyes as I stared at the transformed woman in the mirror. I was still dressed in my sweats and Tshirt, but the hired beautician had styled my hair and applied my makeup to perfection. She even had managed to conceal the dark bags that hung beneath my eyes, a tell-tale sign of the lack of sleep I got the previous night.
I hadn't even had time to process what was happening as I was rushed about from one room to the next, making sure that my bridesmaids (Amy and Ellie) and I were looking flawless.
Every minute that ticked by brought me closer to the moment when I would be standing on the altar, ready to get married. The realisation hadn't sunk in yet, and I was in a world of my own all morning, my mind continually drifting back to Harry.
Ellie giggled as she spun around in her flower girl dress, her curls bouncing as she jumped about. "Look at me mommy!" She exclaimed excitedly as she twirled.
I smiled weakly at her as my wedding dress was slipped over my head, the cold silk sending shivers beneath my skin.
"You look beautiful baby," I told her as I bent down to kiss her cheek before Amy put her arm between us.
"Uh uh, no smudging the masterpiece!" She said, pulling me up straight. "I haven't seen you look this good in aaages babes."
I didn't know whether to feel offended or flattered, but I couldn't really care less right now what she was saying. Her voice was irritating me.
"Err, thanks?" I replied uncertainly, unsure of what to do with myself. The ceremony began in just under an hour, and we were due to be leaving my parents' house any time soon.
My mom swept into the room dressed in a cream knee length dress with a shrug wrapped around her shoulders. She looked beautiful.
She embraced me in her arms, despite Amy's cry of protest. I inhaled her comforting scent as I linked my arms around her body.
"I hope you're doing the right thing," she murmured quietly, only for my ears.
"I hope so too," I replied softly, feeling a nervous twisting in my stomach.
She broke away from me and gave me a look that was mixed with both pity and understanding. I couldn't help but wonder what she truly thought of the choice I had made.
And then my dad approached me with teary eyes. "I'll be walking you up the aisle, I guess," he shrugged awkwardly. He was never one for sappy words or heartfelt speeches. But I loved him all the same.
"C'mere Dad," I gestured, pulling him close into a hug.
When we parted, I could clearly see the tears that had appeared at the top of his cheeks, and I could tell that my mother was trying her hardest not to cry.
"Mom, dad, I'm getting married, not leaving the face of the earth!" I laughed.
As the three of us hugged, we were interrupted by the doorbell ringing downstairs.
"Clary!" Amy called up the stairs. "It's for you!"
I looked into my parents' faces sincerely. "I love you two, ok?" I told them, before heading down the stairs to see who was at the door. A part of me couldn't help hoping that it was Harry.
I shuffled my way to the front door, having a bit of difficulty because of the damn dress. It wasn't really my style at all actually..
"Gemma?" I exclaimed I disbelief. "Hey! Come in and sit down for a while will you?"
Her eyes were shifty, and her lack of enthusiasm told me immediately that there was something wrong.
"It's Harry," she mumbled. "He's missing."
I immediately felt my heart sink. Well what had I expected? For him to show up at my wedding and pretend that everything is alright?
Yeah.. As if that would happen.
"Let me change," I told her determinedly. "I'm coming to find him with you."
