In the snow-covered woods outside District 14 nothing was different. It was eerily silent except from a few of the birds chirping and I perched on a rock looking out towards the iced-up lake. But I wasn't really looking, I was too busy caught up in my thoughts, the thoughts of both my games and so caught up I didn't hear or see Roy come up behind me. I heard a branch crack under someone's foot. Still half in the arena I turned around instantly and had my bow and arrow ready to shoot. "Easy, it's only me." Roy said helping put it down. I had a distant look in my eyes and I felt Roy stared at me because I was once full of life but it had all drained out.
Cato P.O.V. I sat on the train watching the scenery pass and I was on my way to District 14 for the Victory Tour to begin. My thoughts were full of Ruth who I hadn't seen or spoke to since I arrived back in 2. I had of course phoned her, but she never picked up, either her mother or older sister or younger sisters would pick up saying she was out. I had finally stopped knowing it would never be her. I did it a couple of weeks ago and she did for once. I remembered the conversation.
"Hello, who is this and what do you want?" she said to me and I froze at the sound of her voice. I didn't speak to her. "Hello? Is there anyone there?" She said then paused. "Cato? Is that you? Cato?" she asked once again and I heard someone speaking to her. "No Jenny he's not speaking. Yes I know he used to ring everyday you've already told me this. I couldn't. Yes, Juniper. Yes I know he doesn't deserve it. Emilie shut up." Ruth said to her sisters and sighed. "I'm sorry Cato I have to go. I understand that you don't want to talk to me but I haven't got all day." Ruth sad to him and he heard more mumbling.
"JUNIPER I SWEAR IF YOU DON'T GO AWAY I WILL HARM YOU. I'M TRYING TO SAY GOODBYE HERE AND IF YOU WANT ME TO COME THEN SHUT UP! AS I'M THE SECOND OLDEST YOU SHOULD LISTEN TO ME!" Ruth shouted at her sister. "Bye Cato. Only a couple more weeks before the Victory Tour so I'll see you with Roy then. Bye." She said then ended the call. "Bye Ruth I'll see you then." I said even though she couldn't hear him. It was good to hear her voice. I had been waiting to see her for months. 2 week later.
Ruth P.O.V. I stared at the sky with Roy behind me. "I saw some turkeys on the way here. Crossed right in front of me like I wasn't even there." Roy said and I laughed at it. "How rude of them." I replied mischievously. "Well that's what happens when you spend some days in bed being sleep deprived. The stupid birds think they own the place." Roy said and I stared at him in wonder. "When does the tour we're on leave?" Roy asked about the tour. "In a couple of hours." I said and my eyes had gone back to being lost.
"Well then let's go." Roy said standing up, putting his hand out to me, I grabbed it, standing up and followed Roy back to 14. I checked on one of their snares and it had managed to catch a rabbit. I was too busy untying the snare to notice Roy was watching me and to him I seemed more fragile than before but at the same time more dangerous. We walked down the icy rocky terrain and past the stream towards the turkeys. I glanced back to Roy who was behind me before running and hiding behind a large rock. Where there was a small gap so I could watch what they were doing. The turkey's too busy making a racket and eating some of the food on the floor. I got out an arrow from my sheath and placed it in the bow.
I lined it up aiming at the closest one and shot it. But I didn't see the turkey there in front of me was Marvel. I watched him look at the arrow then collapse to the floor. I gasped and sat back so I couldn't see him and started to hyperventilate. Scared and haunted by the sight I had just witnessed again. "Woah, woah, woah, Ruth. It's okay, you're not in the arena anymore." Roy said trying to calm me down and I was thrashing around looking frantically back. "You're okay." Roy tried to put a hand on me to calm me but instead I stepped back and let out several screams.
I looked over but saw no Marvel just turkeys running away. "You're okay. You're safe. You're okay. You're here in 14, you're not in the arena anymore. You're here with me." Roy said kissed me on the lips to slow my breathing and I looked at Roy. Roy pushed some strands of my hair back. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry." I said crying with a worried Roy by my side. "I'm okay, we should... we should go." I said to Roy who helped me put my bow and sheath of arrows away in a hollow trunk. We both walked out of the woods and onto the frost-bitten meadow.
