The morphling in Roy's arms and she was struggling to breathe. "Hey, hey. It's okay. It's okay. Shh, shh, shh. Hey do you want to see something? Look up. Look. Look at that." He said gesturing to the sky as they both looked at the sky, the sun was rising creating a colourful picture. "It's incredible, isn't it? All those colours. Don't worry about anything else. I'll be right here with you. It's okay. It's okay." Roy said to her as I remembered Rue, it was too much for me. I turned away and walked further into the water so her back was to them.
The morphling took her last breaths in Roy's arms as he pushed her out in the water. Finnick watched the monkey's mystified as they turned back into the jungle. The canon sounded and Roy watched as the hovercraft collected her body as Beetee walked over to Roy probably about me. "What's wrong with Ruth?" He asked seriously about me. I felt Roy looked at me while Finnick looked at me in sadness probably thinking about what happened last year.
"I think it might have reminded me of Rue's last moments. It probably brought back too many memories; you know." Roy said about last year as Finnick nodded and walked up to me. "Are you okay Rutty?" Finnick said worried about me and I nodded. "Are you sure?" he asked again as I shook my head and my eyes filled up with tears and Finnick hugged me. "I'm sorry about Mags, it's my fault I couldn't carry her." I said about Mags and not be able to save her. "No, no it's not. She wasn't going to survive for too long, it's probably better she went sooner rather than later." Finnick said about Mags going to die sooner or later and I nodded.
"It's not fair, is it? No, we're meant to be safe now we've won. But no, they have to put a group of people who've been broken from their games, back in to fight. Gee that's so nice." I said about the games and everyone. "I love you Rutty." Finnick said to me in a brotherly way. "I love you too Finny." I said in a sisterly way to Finnick. Finnick walked out of the water and onto the beach. I looked out into the jungle and thinking about things. I'm wondering how Cato was and if he was okay. "You'll do well with Sage, Cato." I whispered to myself about Sage and Cato being together. I started to sing a song I remembered from long ago.
"Can you, can you, hear the song. The song of the past life, that I still want." I sang a bit of it. Finnick, Roy and I sat on the beach cleaning our weapons. "Where did the mutts go?" I asked about the mutts from the jungle. "I don't know. They stayed in the jungle and wouldn't come out." Roy said about it as I thought for a while. "Like the fog, it's as though there's invisible walls in which we can go through just not certain things." I said thinking about what I know about the arena from previous games.
But I didn't even realize how close to the truth I actually was. We all sat in silence until a parachute landed in front of us and inside was a loaf of bread. I remembered both my games when Mox's gifts were often timed to send a message and I made a mental note of it. Be friends with Finnick and you'll get food. Finnick turned the bread over in his hands examining the crust with a bit possessively. It had the green tint from seaweed that the bread from District 4 always had. We all knew it was his as he had just realized how precious it is and that he may never see another loaf again.
Or maybe it had some memory connected to Mags but all he said was "This will go well with shellfish." I looked at the sun and I estimated it was going on ten o'clock, that we had been in the arena for about a day. Eleven of them were dead and Fourteen still alive. Somewhere in the jungle as ten were concealed and careers were among them. I didn't feel like trying to remember who the others were. For me, the jungle had quickly evolved from a place of protection to a sinister trap. Piper knew at some point they would be forced to re-enter it's depths, either to hunt or to be hunted, but for right now I was planning to stay on the beach and I didn't hear Finnick or Roy suggesting otherwise.
For a while the jungle seemed almost static, humming and shimmering but not showing how dangerous it actually was. Then in the distance, screaming. Across from them, a huge wedge of the jungle seemed to vibrate. An enormous wave that started high up on the hill, over trees as it travelled down the steep slope. It hit the existing seawater with such great force that even the far distance they were from it they received small waves as a canon fired. We watched as the hovercraft appeared over the arena where the wave began and plucked a body from the trees. Thirteen, I thought to myself about the others and hoping Katniss, Peeta, Johanna and Wiress are okay. The circle of water slowly calmed down as we all settled down and began to relax as much as we could. That is when I spotted them. Four figures about two spokes away stumbled onto the beach.
