Remus Duke

The next day, Roman bumped into his brother.

Quite literally.

He was standing in line at the cafeteria, he'd gotten five dollars from a bill he found on the sidewalk so he figured he'd get more snacks for his stash.

Remus was chasing after his friend--Roman thought he was Remus' boyfriend--Janus Serpent.

Then, he came crashing into Roman. Well- only Roman's shoulder, but it might as well have been his whole body because Roman's legs buckled beneath him, and both him and Remus crashed to the tile floors.

Janus turned and ran back, helping Remus up.

"Remus, I told you to be careful."

"You stole my stick-on mustache!" That was the point they looked at Roman. He was still on the floor.

"Oh, shit-" Remus and Janus gasped in unison.

"Here let me help yo-" Janus started.

"Roman?" Remus interrupted.

He let Janus help him up.

"Remus," he tried to smile. "Yeah, it's uh... it's me." Remus looked to Janus and beamed.

"I haven't talked to you in forever!" Remus hugged him, it made Roman... happy. "Uh.. how's home..?" Roman sighed and looked to the side.

"Pretty much the same." Remus ruffled his hair.

"Hang in there, brother bear. You're welcome with Mom and me any time.." Roman stuffed his hands in his pockets and nodded. Remus strode away and Janus stayed a moment, looking him up and down.

"You're... remarkably light," Janus mumbled. "Have you been eating?" Roman just shrugged, not really wanting to answer.

It was a nice interaction, but it did end.

"Hey, Princey." He turned, it was the emo. It was strange that he didn't know the emo, given that Roman "knew" everyone.

"Hi?" He tried to sound mean again, but the emo remained like yesterday.

"What's up?" Roman shrugged.

"Don't you have friends? You hang out with Logan and Patton all the time, why bother with me?" Roman sat, leaning on his tree again.

"You're cool," he shrugged, flopping down near him. "You didn't seem like the type to get involved with a whole group. I didn't wanna overwhelm you."

"I don't associate with people."

"I figured," The emo laid back in the grass. "Why not?"

"I'm not a friend-person," Roman sighed, he hated lying to the emo. "I'm not very interesting, anyway."

"Well, I think you're quite interesting, Princey."

"Yeah, emo-nightmare?" He smirked.

"Now we both get nicknames."

"Well, what's your name?"

"The Boogeyman."

It was like that for the next while. Roman would ask the emo's name and always get random responses like "Your worst nightmare" or "The closet demon". Something like that.

Then Friday came, and Roman came home to an empty house again. He pulled out a DVD and watched a Disney movie. They always took him away from his house.

Today he watched his favorite one that was still on the shelf, Hercules. He didn't think his father would be home for a while so he ate a little food and continued his movie.

Boy, was he wrong about his father's schedule.

He heard the gates open.

Roman stiffened, he darted up and ran up the stairs, tripping twice as he ran.

He stood again and kept running until he was in his room.

He collapsed on the floor and locked his door behind him.

His lights weren't even on.

He could hear the door downstairs open.

The tv downstairs was still on.

He couldn't move, god damn it.

Why couldn't he move?

Silence. Darkness.

Roman sat up, his back stinging. Actually, a lot of him stung, he was only now realizing it.
The price to pay for tripping up the stairs in a rush like that.

He took off his hoodie and just sat by his door in his t-shirt. He curled up into a ball by the door, silently listening to the tv turn off and silently listening to footsteps go up the stairs.
His vision got blurry and he buried his face in his knees, letting tears either fall or fade away and back into his eyes.

A loud, deep voice came from outside the door.

"I told you to stop doing shit without my permission." That was all. He just walked away after that.

There had to be some other thing. Some ulterior motive?
Maybe he was just bored of Roman?

He sat by the door and cried into his knees for another few minutes before going into his bathroom to wash his face.

He looked in the mirror before he put his hoodie back on.

"What happened to you..?" He asked his reflection. "You're a broken kid." He sighed and shoved himself into his hoodie. It was Saturday afternoon now.

~~~
Roman slowly went down the stairs at about 5 PM.
He stopped and stared at the pieces of his Hercules cd on the floor. His eyes got teary but he shook his head and cautiously stepped about halfway into the living room.
"Father," He began, keeping a good six feet between himself and the tall man. "Can I go outside?" His father shrugged.
"I don't fucking care. Just go."
He hated his father, he wanted to go out and go to Remus and never come back.
Roman walked outside, through the gates. A few neighbors waved. The mailman happened to be out at that time and waved to him. Roman sighed, he didn't want pity, he wanted help. The mailman almost got it for him, he was so close but it didn't work.
Then he bumped into the emo- well not the emo. He bumped into Patton. The emo was with him though. Roman managed not to topple this time.
"Princey?" The emo smiled slightly. Roman nodded. "Are you wearing makeup?"
"Virge, who's this?" Patton asked, looking between the two.
"Oh, I'm uh- Roman." Patton bounced and looked like he'd just made a discovery.
"Oh! You're in my chem class!" Patton smiled.
"Roman, huh?" 'Virge' said.
"Vvvirge?" Roman returned with the same tone.
"Virgil," Virgil said.
