What's Underneath

Sorry for not uploading last night I was busy---
Here's a freshly baked chapter for you strange people-

Virgil rushed over to Roman after Remus started talking to the employee.

"Oh my God, are you okay? I'm so sorry, I didn't know he was gonna be here," Virgil gently picked up Roman's arms and glanced around his body. "You're not hurt, are you? I'll kill him if he hurt you."

Roman was stunned. Nobody ever cared for him like this except his mother or Remus. He zoned out thinking about it for a minute until he looked back at Virgil's concerned face.

"I- no, no, I'm okay. I just bumped my arm on the floor."

"I'm gonna kill hi-"

"No! I'm- I'm fine, Virge." Virgil's shoulders relaxed as he took a deep breath.

"I just hate it when people act like my friends are just... pests." Roman nodded.

"But I'm okay, it's fine." Virgil sighed, looking at Roman for a moment.

"You have dirt on your face... do you want me to help you wash it off? The bathrooms are right there, we can use the sinks." Roman instantly remembered the reason he had makeup on.

"Ah- hah-...uh, no, it's alright."

"Well, we can't just leave dirt on your face." Virgil looked a little worried.

Roman glanced around and more quietly said.

"No, I don't have my makeup."

"Princey, you look great without makeup, you're fine."

"No, you don't-... I have... acne?" He was really trying for an excuse.

"You didn't have acne yesterday." Virgil just looked confused now, still a little concerned, but more confused.

"It's- whatever, I'm fine, creepy cookie." Roman shrugged.

Remus walked back over to them and the three started walking again. Virgil apologized for the whole scene again but Remus tried to assure him that it was okay.

They decided to stay at Virgil's house until about 10 PM. Both of Virgil's moms were really sweet. The one they'd already met was named Carolyn. She had fair skin and blonde hair. His mom that the twins hadn't met yet had darker, ashy skin. her hair was brown. Her name was Abby, she was a lot shyer than Carolyn, though.

They made the boys food and tried to make them feel at home. Carolyn kept giggling at Virgil for the first half of the time they were there.

"Oh, it's ten o'clock," Remus chirped. "You should probably head home, Roman." Virgil frowned slightly but gave Roman a small smile.

"It's alright. I can walk you home if you want." Virgil said. Roman smiled and got confused when he heard Carolyn giggle again before walking away.

"Well, my house is the other way, but it's not far from here, I can walk by myself," Remus smiled, standing. "But have fun Brother Bear!" Remus waved and walked out.

Roman stood up and started out the door with Virgil.

"You don't have any acne, do you?" Virgil said when they were a little ways down the road.

"Well... no," Roman murmured, stuffing his hands in his pockets and looking down.

"Princey..." Virgil's voice was soft, it sounded like every word that came from him was laced ever so sweetly with concern. "Is there something going on in your home?"

Roman's head shot up and he looked at Virgil. He cursed himself for doing so because now it was probably so obvious.

"Wha- hah- no," Roman stammered. "Where'd you get that from?"

"Roman," It felt weird how Virgil only called him that when he was concerned. But it also did kind of add on to how much Virgil's words meant to him. "Please, if there's something going on, you have to tell me," Roman shifted. "Please."

"I... can't tell you that." Roman stared at the ground, officially stopping walking. "Listen, Virge, I wish I could, but I can't."

Virgil set a firm hand on Roman's shoulder.

"Roman. I really want to help you, because I-..." Virgil paused. "Because you're important to me."

"You only met me like a week ago--at most," Roman sighed. "Why did you even talk to me in the first place? I'm not special, I'm just- just- there." Virgil shook his head.

"It doesn't matter when we met. You're my friend now, Princey." Roman's heart ached. It was an awful feeling.

His heart twisted in pain. Seeing Virgil standing there trying so hard to help him because Virgil could see through everything. Virgil knew. He was trying to help and Roman was too... afraid. He was too afraid to tell his friend--his only friend--that he needed help.

Virgil was so good.
He was such a good person.
Roman couldn't even imagine being as important to someone as Virgil was to him.

If he didn't tell Virgil, would Virgil just... leave him? Roman needed Virgil now. Virgil made him happy.

In the moment of standing next to his only friend, his best friend, Roman couldn't feel more alone in his decision.

What is he supposed to do, then?

Tell Virgil the same "I'm fine" story all over again and risk Virgil leaving?
Or does he tell him and risk... everything.
In telling Virgil, he risks everything. He risks nothing working and his father finding out. He risks Virgil seeing how weak Roman really is. He risks his only friendship in years. But he also risks not taking a chance and staying in his home situation forever.

What in the Titans' name was he supposed to do?

It didn't seem like there was a right choice.
Was there a wrong choice?
There were consequences to both.
So is there really any right or wrong?

Roman found...
He didn't know.
