More silence.
Roman had to make a decision. He had to choose something. He looked at Virgil again, hoping it would help him decide.
Virgil's face was darkened with concern. It was tired and pained, much like his own. Roman looked him in the eyes and he felt part of himself in Virgil.
He just started thinking.
All of the days alone in his room, all of the days alone at lunch in school, all of the just- waiting for things to get better.
Could he really just... keep waiting?
"Please," Virgil said again. Roman winced. It hurt to keep lying. "Roman, I want to help you."
"What if it doesn't work?" Roman murmured, he just looked at Virgil--Virgil looked at him.
"What if it does?" The two stood in silence. Roman just looked at him. Virgil sighed and slowly grabbed both of Roman's hands. "I'm gonna try, Roman. I'm gonna do my best. I just need you to tell me."
"I... okay." Virgil smiled slightly.
"Thank you, Roman." Roman almost felt defeated. But he felt... good. He felt like an insane weight was lifted off of his shoulders. "I promise you, I'm gonna try."
Roman couldn't find words.
It was like the feeling he got while Virgil was making sure he was okay at the movie theatre. The feeling was so surprising and good. The fact that someone, anyone, cared about him was just kind of surreal.
Roman stood there looking at one of the only people he felt actually cared about him. He felt tears well up in his eyes as he nodded slightly.
"Awh, Princey, don't cry. It's okay." Virgil squeezed Roman's hands gently.
"It's not. But I like your reassurance, emo nightmare." Virgil chuckled quietly.
"Well, it's Sunday and you gotta go home. We can talk tomorrow." Roman nodded. He was still scared out of his mind, as per usual. Virgil probably knew that. "Try to get some sleep, Sir-Sing-A-Lot."
Virgil let go of one of Roman's hands and caressed his arm.
"I... I will." Roman nodded. Virgil smiled.
"I'm proud of you already." Virgil quickly hugged Roman, let go, and then turned and began to walk away.
Roman smiled to himself.
He finally had something to hold on to.He watched Virgil walk for a bit before turning and walking the short rest of the way home.
Roman just silently went to his room and laid down in his bed.
"Virgil," He smiled to himself, the name gave him hope.
Roman looked around his room. His eyes landed on some paper and pencils.
He stood and carried them over to his bed.
Roman carefully sketched out a tower, then drew a prince in the tower.
The prince was him.He'd always loved fairytales. He wished he were in a fairytale.
The idea was so sweet. The idea that he could be on some epic quest, a destiny before him, like a puzzle where he just had to fill in the pieces to achieve happiness.
A beautiful world with magic and goodness everywhere.A world where he was promised and guaranteed love and a happy ending.
He loved the idea of love and a happy ending more than anything.
That's what he really wanted. A 'Happily Ever After' of his own.He slowly sketched the form of another person beneath the tower.
Not a princess, society wishes.It was a knight. He had messy dark hair... pale skin...
His knight had dark armor, and-
He saw the gates open out his window.
Roman just silently swept the paper and pencil under his bed."No more fairytales tonight," Roman sighed to himself. "Only dreams, now."
~~~
Roman walked his way to school.
His feet were sore. He walked a lot yesterday.He decided this morning that after yesterday, he was going to carry some of his makeup on him at all times.
He had it on again, today. What was there yesterday was still there today, obviously.The morning went on as it did every day, apart from in his third hour.
Virgil was at the front of the class talking to the teacher.
Roman had basically forgotten Virgil was in this class.
The teacher just nodded while Virgil talked, then nodded one last time when Virgil finished. Saying one more thing before Virgil walked away.
Virgil turned and made eye contact with Roman, he smiled.
Virgil made his way to Roman's desk and sat next to him.
"You asked him to..?" Roman picked at his nails.
"Yeah," Virgil smiled again. "I hope it's not weird--I just thought it'd be better."
"No, no, it's not weird," Roman's face flushed a little. He pushed it away. "We... are friends now, it's... nice?" Roman was kind of upset at himself for not having a better way to word that.
"Nice," Virgil chuckled. Roman smiled lightly.
The class went on, followed by another class, and another.
Roman sighed in relief when the bell rang for lunch. He went outside, as per usual.
His days in school weren't ever really different from each other until Virgil started talking to him.He was just about to sit at his tree when a hand gently grabbed his shoulder. Roman turned to see Virgil.
"Hey, Princey," Virgil grinned slightly. "If you want to..." Virgil glanced over to where Patton and Logan sat. "We could sit with Patton and Logan."
Roman stared for a moment. He was almost astonished.
He'd forgotten that Virgil had chosen specifically to sit with him instead of his original friends.
Now he felt a little guilty-."Sure, that sounds wonderful." Roman smiled softly. Virgil nodded and waved for him to follow as he walked to his other friends.
Patton looked up as Roman slowly, anxiously, walked over. He gasped.
"Roman!" Patton cheered. "Good to see you, buddy." Patton beamed, waving.
