He wasn’t sure what his eyes noticed first once the elevator opened. Was it the almost unrecognizable face, swollen and covered with cuts and bruises. Or was it his hands that were covered in a thick layer of blood. Drier in some areas, which meant that he’d been bleeding for more than a few minutes. Perhaps it was the way his mouth hung open with his head tilted back as if he was gasping for air that was non-existent.

He tried to keep his composure but a million thoughts were racing in his mind when he knelt beside Alec and took his face by his jaw, shaking it just a little, so as not to hurt him. But even if it did hurt, he was sure that at some point Alec couldn’t sense the pain there because there was so much of him that seemed to be aching or throbbing.

He had expected Alec to wake up, to tell him where Valentine was in the building, to give him some sort of plan or explanation, but instead of doing any of that his head fell to the side. His eyes remained closed. His body had reached a point of exhaustion.

“No no no” he rushed out while delicately grabbing Alec’s face delicately and tapping it lightly to get a response.

“Hey” he tapped again.

This time he grabbed Alec face with both hands and turned his head to face directly toward him.

“It’s me” He whispered, rubbing Alec’s beaten face with his thumb.

“You’re gonna be okay”

Alec’s eyes opened a crack before swiftly closing again.

“Magnus” he uttered, but it was barely audible.

Finally, a sign of life.

“He’ll try to run” he continued in between short breaths

“I don’t care”

“I got most of them,” Alec said with a weak smile, before his eyes slowly closed again.

“Stay awake Alexander '' Magnus urged while grabbing one of Alec’s arms and throwing it over his shoulder.

He grunted as he got up from the round, dragging Alec along with him. That’s when he saw the blood dripping to the floor. Magnus paused for a moment to inspect where it was coming from and saw the gash that stretched across Alec’s abs. It Almost scared Magnus when he heard Alec’s small voice again.

“It’s bad. I know”

Magnus wrapped his free arm around Alec's waist and firmly secured Alec’s arm that hung around his neck in place.

“It’s nothing, you’ll be just fine” He told Alec, but it felt like he was reassuring himself at the same time.

He cautioned Alec before stepping out of the elevator and beginning their trek to the exit. The main hall of the institute that should be bustling with activity and shadowhunters was empty. Everyone had either evacuated, stayed in their quarters, or were searching out for circle members amongst themselves.

Magnus practically fell into the exit door when they reached it and the fresh air hit their noses. He attempted to sit Alec on the ground so he could form a portal back to his apartment and was all of a sudden made aware of how bad the situation really was when Alec's body slumped over immediately, hitting the pavement.

Magnus tried not to mind as he waved his arms and hands to create the portal and promptly threw Alec over his shoulder with a loud grunt to carry him in.

Over the years Magnus had become used to handling stressful situations but for some reason this time felt different. He felt so strangely attached to Alec already. So much so that if Alec were to die right now well...he would actually care. Being immortal you learn over time that it’s best to not care. It’s best to keep people at a distance so that when they ultimately leave you behind, it doesn’t hurt. As much at least. Magnus has known Alec for only two days and he already cares. It scares him.
