It was dark when he arrived back at the institute. In the mundane world quietness would’ve been expected but this was around the time many shadowhunters carried out missions so the main hall was rather busy when he opened the entrance doors.

Alec, for the first time in a long time, was tired. In all aspects of the word. Tired of being awake, tired of people, tired of living a lie. Most days he could handle it and deal with the unfairness of it all. He liked to block out anything that involved feelings. But today wasn’t most days. What had this warlock done to him. He had him begging for a chance at a relationship. Alec cringed at the memory from an hour ago. It hadn’t even been a week and Magnus already had him wrapped around his finger.

Alec sighed heavily before turning into the hallway of his quarters. He almost did a double take when he saw Jace lying on the floor next to his door. He tried quieting his footsteps, but it was too late, Jace had already heard him and speedily jumped to his feet. He didn’t say anything. Instead of speaking he walked the few steps necessary towards Alec and wrapped his arms around him. Alec felt Jace’s breath quicken against his chest. Not fully accepting the hug he kept his arms at his sides.

“I thought you were dead” Jace spoke against Alec’s chest, squeezing him even tighter.

It was funny how a week ago Alec would've melted at the contact. He would’ve hung on to every word Jace said  like it was his last. But now...things were different.

“Please say something”

“I- I can’t breathe” Alec said in a strained voice.

“Oh sorry” Jace apologized, letting go of him and taking a step back.

He looked down at the floor before his eyes met Alec’s once again.

“I hate it when we fight” Jace whispered

“That’s because it doesn’t usually happen”

“I know, and I’m sorry. I was too proud to say it before, but I’m sorry if I ever made you feel like you were... disposable.”

He paused before continuing.

“Listen Clary means a lot to me”

“I know. That’s been made pretty clear.” Alec said, walking past Jace.

He was about to use one of his runes to unlock the door, when he remembered he had lost his stele. Jace appeared right behind him with the missing stele in his hands just as Alec turned around.

“Thank you” he stammered while grabbing the it and unlocking the door.

“Your bow and arrows are in the training room”

Alec turned again, giving him a small nod and bent down to take off his boots while Jace stood awkwardly.

“I mean you both mean a lot to me, I just wanna make things okay again”

Alec let out a loud sigh as he kicked off his last boot and rose to meet Jace’s face.

“You can start by letting me get some rest” Alec said with his face lacking any sort of emotion.

His eyes shifted towards the door of the dark room, insinuating that Jace should leave but even then Jace didn’t move from his spot. Instead he started asking questions.

“Did you think you were gonna die”

Alec froze at the unexpected statement.

“I-” he started to say something before he stopped to reword it.

“I wasn’t really thinking anything”

“Why didn’t you call?” Jace asked in a voice that was practically a whisper.
