"Move please" Alec slurred out through a mouth full of saliva and tooth paste.
He turned on the water, spit into the sink and continued talking about their topic of the morning while Magnus was still brushing his teeth.
"All I'm saying is that I don't see any other way. Think about it and just listen. Are you listening?"
"Mmhmm" Magnus hummed, obviously still pretty busy.
"I approach Valentine, tell him that I was wrong and he was right. I go on and on about how I should've taken his offer that day, I should've gone with him. I can convince him that I'll help him get the cup. I could tell him the in's and out's of the Shadowhunter operation, but really I'll be doing the opposite. I'll find out his plans, his security, memorize the layout of the building so that by the time the invasion actually happens, Valentine won't see it coming"
Magnus leaned over the sink and turned on the water, spitting into it as Alec watched him intently, waiting for a response.
"Still no" Magnus stated bluntly before walking past him and exiting the bathroom.
"Why?" Alec complained following Magnus into his vast closet.
"Sorry if I don't like the idea of my boyfriend willingly sending himself into the lion's den"
Magnus came to an abrupt halt in choosing his outfit and turned to face Alec.
"Do you remember what he did to you? Because I feel like I'm the only person who remembers the fact that you were half past dead after he was done. Do you know what it felt like to see you like that and not know whether or not you would survive?"
Alec looked at the ground for a moment. He understood where Magnus was coming from but it's what he had to do. He was a leader and leaders make sacrifices.
"So no...I don't think it's a good idea and nothing you say can change my mind. I won't tell you not to do it. But-"
Magnus interrupted his own words by grabbing Alec face with both hands to make sure he was looking at him when he said,
"I just hope you understand where I'm coming from and take that into account when you make your decision"
Magnus let go of him and returned to what he was doing. He mumbled a few words to himself under his breath but Alec could hear what Magnus thought he didn't.
"I just wish you wouldn't"
Alec didn't think twice before blurting out his next words and maybe he should have.
"I won't do it"
"What?" Magnus said, turning around swiftly.
"If you don't want me to do it then I won't. This is me...putting you first. Because I care about you"
Magnus almost immediately wrapped his arms around Alec. It took a second for Alec to react but soon he was wrapping his arms around Magnus as well.
"Thank you" Magnus breathed the words onto Alec's shoulders.
Even with Magnus' overwhelming joy Alec couldn't let go of the idea. He realized he had to get used to the fact that it wasn't just him anymore. He can't just do crazy things and not care about the repercussions because there is actually one person who truly cares about what happens as a result.
Magnus pulled away just a little so he could see Alec's face.
"What would you like for breakfast. I can magic up just about anything. One of the many perks of having a warlock at your disposal. Pancakes? Waffles? Crepes?"
"Slow down, I need a minute to think about these things" Alec laughed.
"Or..." Magnus said with a change of tone in his voice.
He leaned in, kissing the edge of Alec's jawline and then moved lower, leaving gentle kisses down his neck. His hands wandered down Alec's back and once they reached the hem of the shirt, stopped.
"We could keep ourselves busy until you think of something" Magnus whispered, nibbling on Alec's ear.
"Yeah I like the second option better" Alec grunted and his lips found Magnus'
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Maryse looked at her son as if it was a stranger that sat in the seat across from her. She was inches away from leaping across the table to knock some sense into him but her calm and collected composure said otherwise.
"There are other ways" Alec assured, trying to convince his mother.
"Alec, Shadowhunter lives are not for you to toy with, you need to be smarter than that"
"I know"
"Then why are you being so selfish?"
"I-"
"Listen to me Alexander. You have placed yourself in an excellent position here. You are the best and the brightest that we have, you are a future leader. This is your chance to show everyone, show the clave, what their future leader looks like. Now is not the time to cower under pressure, we need you"
"I'm not cowering. You said it yourself, you need me. Here and alive. It's too much of a risk" Alec defended, while toying with a pen from his mothers desk in his hand to ease the pent up tension he felt.
"Since when were you afraid of risks" his mother pressed.
Alec sat silent while Maryse seared her eyes into his, waiting for him to crack or say anything. But he didn't. He stood his ground. His mothers brows furrowed, indicating that she was thinking. Hard. She began to speak.
"I wasn't going to tell you this until after it was all over. There's a position open in Idris. Your father and I learned of it while we were there and mentioned you. Your history, previous missions, everything. But it didn't really matter because they already knew who you were. You have quite a reputation in the shadow world. They want you Alec. They see what I see in you. Talent, courage, bravery"
It took everything in Alec to control his facial expressions and not jump for joy. This is what he had been waiting for his whole life. The opportunity to be recognized by the higher ups. The Clave. It meant everything to him. And Maryse knew it, because she leaned across the table and held her hand out for him to take, which he did.
"You can't turn that down. You can't miss this opportunity, you'd be doing yourself a disservice. You can make a life for yourself over there. What's keeping you here?
Magnus, Alec thought
"Nothing. There's nothing for you here and you deserve so much more than that. You have to go. And in order for them to keep wanting you, you need to do everything you can to show them what you're made of."
It was literally the opportunity of a lifetime. But, so was Magnus. He couldn't have both. Or maybe he could like Magnus said. He was confused. He was being handed everything he had ever asked for, on a silver platter. And he couldn't refuse.
