"captain vangeance? here's my report from my last mission," yuno said as he entered the squad captain's office and closed the door behind him.
"you can place it over there, thank you," william replied, gesturing to the stacks of untouched paperwork on the desk where you used to sit.
yuno placed the paper on top of the pile. "hmm... lady y/n isn't here again," bell, the wind sylph, mumbled to herself. not seeing the only person she liked besides yuno, she sat on his shoulder, sulking.
william paused his writing, something clearly bothering him. "shall i invite the lady for your sylph, yuno?" he muttered.
"there's no need for that, captain. we wouldn't want to bother lady y/n. she might be busy with something else. if that's all, i'll go now," yuno replied. despite his distant demeanor, he had noticed his captain's shift in behavior since your absence.
william sighed. it was true; he hadn't seen much of you lately. he tried to convince himself that you were just busy with charlotte, but the past month without your presence had been difficult for him, and possibly his squad members too.
-
"Y/N?" charlotte called out, spotting your figure a few meters away. she was at the black market, dragged there by her squad members who were celebrating for some unknown reason. "you guys go first, i need to tend to something," she said.
"but captain! are you sure you're not ditching us?" one of them protested.
"i'm not, now go... i'll be quick," she assured them before disappearing into the crowd.
charlotte weaved through the bustling market, scanning for the familiar figure in a black cape. "Y/N!" she called again, more urgently this time.
you turned around and saw your best friend making her way towards you, frost by your side. it was fortunate that charlotte had her hair down and was dressed in plain clothes, avoiding unwanted attention.
"charlotte?" you mumbled as she finally reached you. "what are you doing here? it's too crowded for you."
"what are you doing here? and what's with the glasses and cape? i haven't seen you for a while and you haven't been around the base either. i was worried," she said, slightly out of breath.
"well... i've been out—trying to, y'know... just flying around," you nervously responded, your voice stuttering. charlotte knew you well enough to notice the nervous tone.
"are you sure?" she asked, her eyes searching yours.
"yep... actually, i need to go... guess i'll see you around," you smiled slightly. she nodded, but before you could jump to frost, she gently held your arm.
"please be okay. remember that i'm right here if you need someone to talk to," she said softly before letting go. you could only nod, fearing that your voice might betray you.
with that, you and frost ran off towards the exit. charlotte watched you go, sensing that something was off. she knew that sometimes people needed to figure things out on their own. she was aware of your long history of being alone and surviving. she hoped that whatever was troubling you wouldn't drag you down.
or so she thought.
-
it was already afternoon when you came back to the mansion, dripping wet from the relentless rain. frost immediately drifted off to sleep after drying herself, and you locked her in before entering the house and starting your routine: showering, freshening up, cleaning your mess, and cooking dinner.
today felt different. despite having done this for months, you suddenly felt an overwhelming anxiety. you sighed and continued chopping vegetables, your mind swarming with thoughts.
you questioned your decisions. had you done right by fleeing to clover kingdom instead of facing the problems in your homeland? you couldn't bear the thought of your own people suffering under the dark triad's unrelenting rule while you helped the citizens of clover kingdom.
you were uncertain about continuing your research for magic tools, knowing they would be insufficient in your battle against the zogratis. even with your dragon and magic tools, it wouldn't be enough to defeat the triad.
did you make the right decision staying at this mansion? trusting the man who owns this house and letting frost trust him? did you make the right decision of developing feelings for him?
what a childish thought, you berated yourself. why did you let yourself be tied to such ridiculous emotions? you've been in the same situation before. how could you fall for the same trap, the same danger that brought you down to your most vulnerable state?
as these doubts flooded your mind, you pressed too hard on the knife and ended up cutting your finger. you stared at the blood dripping from the wound, the vivid red contrasting against your pale skin. yet, you stood there, unmoving.
you had strong magical healing spells that could relieve the pain and rid the wound, or you could easily wash it with the running water by the sink a few steps away. but you stood there, immobilized by the weight of your thoughts.
there was nothing in your mind, yet everything weighed on your chest. every doubt and frustration crashed down on you in a single strike. you hadn't felt this sort of pain, this vulnerability, in a long time. it made you nauseous.
your vision spun as you gripped your head. your chest tightened, and you felt the urge to break down. the last thing you saw was a light and someone calling out your name. then, everything turned black, and your body went numb.
