We continued walking through the tunnel, no encounters with any kind of mutant, creature, or human. Obviously something is happening, somewhere.

A deafening scream echoed through the long hallway, and it was easy to tell that whatever made that noise was close-by. We began running to the sound with our guns aimed and ready to fire. It was just one j'avo. In one quick shot, I splattered it's brain into the wall. Just beautiful, yeah that's the word (note the sarcasm). Hearing footsteps behind me, I whipped around and was greeted by a multitude of the masked-mutants.

"We got a problem," Piers and I stated in unison.

I've never been on a mission where everything went wrong until now. We are surrounded on all sides by things highly capable of killing us. Our shots rang through the thin corridor and the j'avos kept coming in. I was quickly starting to miss the silence and solitude of two minutes ago.

"Agh!" Piers yelled out and from there it was complete madness.

Chris and I both turned to see what was wrong with Piers and the sight made my jaw drop. His right eye was glowing as if he had taken a syringe full of the virus, but he had the antidote. This doesn't make any sense. There must be some kind of stimulant somewhere.

I looked around for whatever could make him mutant-up, then a I saw it. He had machete marks crossing his face and cutting through his clothes, and some of them look pretty deep. It must be the small amount of the virus still in him, trying to save the host.

Without thinking (which was not the best decision) I cut, shot, and hit my way through the crowd. With the sound of ceramic masks under my feet, I finally made it to Piers.

"Chris we need some backup over here!"

With the j'avos occupied I could focus my attention back to Piers. He was grunting and grimacing due to the pain.

"Piers, Piers calm down. You have to be calm."

I tried to talk him through healing, I doubt he's had much experience. I placed my hand on his shoulder and gently pushed him to the floor.

"Piers you're gonna be ok. Just calm down."

He's getting worked up and he can't heal, or stop turning. He grunted loudly and practically collapsed in my arms. It's taking over him.

"Stop, Piers no! It's gonna be ok it's gonna be ok! I can't lose you, not again!"

When people have panic attacks you're supposed to slow their breathing. Maybe that will work here. Hell, I'm running out of options. I quickly pressed my lips to his. Despite our situation, it was amazing. I've missed his lips on mine.

After a few seconds, he kissed back. I think it's working. He grabbed my face to deepen the kiss, eventhough we are practically staring death in the eyes by doing this.

After a few more seconds locked on to Piers' lips, I pulled away.

"Don't ever pull a stunt like that again, Piers. I thought I lost you."

He faltered for a second but regained his composure.

"Now get off your ass, soldier," I continued in an attempt to lighten the mood.

Cat and mouse, just like old times.

"Hey guys, I know it may seem like it but you two aren't the only ones here," Chris called out.

His statement was muffled by the crowd around him. Love can do some crazy things, but I didn't think making me forget that I almost left a man behind was not one of them.

Those five or six last j'avos were gone in a flash, unlike their scattered brothers.
