“Shit!” Danni curses as she waves her hand in front of her and scrunches her face up really tight.
I come and take the gun from her. She looks at me like I just took her only child but murmurs, “Thanks” under her breath.
I shrug my shoulders and take on the job of attempting to take the shell canisters out.
Every once and a while, the shell canisters get stuck in the barrel of the gun, and you have to pull them out. It hurts you hands like heck, but you are proud when you get them out. Danni walks over next to me and slumps down on the floor. She groans and rubs her blistered hands. She proceeds to spit on them and tries to keep the fresh openings clean.
Pop
One out, one to go.
Danni groans again at my succession.
“Hand it back to me.” She says holding out her hand.
I shake my head.
She moans and lies down.
It is still night out and Cooper and Margret are sleeping. We’ve seen no zombies lately, well, with the exception of all the ones outside, but we don’t count those. We’ve been trying to teach Cooper to shoot, it hasn’t been going too well. I recall the memory of the first time we tried to get him to shoot. We were outside hiding behind a shrub. Cooper had one of the guns, and we were choosing out different zombies for him to shoot.
“Alright, see that zombie over there next to the tree?” Danni had asked.
Cooper nodded.
“Good, because that is what you are trying to shoot.”
Cooper nodded again.
“What happens if I miss?” Cooper asked.
“Oh, nothing-------“ Danni had started to say.
Margret cut her off before she could finish the sentence.
“Don’t worry, you won’t miss, you’ll do great!” She peeped.
Cooper just nodded.
He held up the gun, just like we had showed him too, and then shot.
He missed entirely and hit the ground about thirty feet away from his target.
Margret blushed and Cooper looked really embarrassed.
“You haven’t really used a gun too much.” Margret stated, or more like squealed.
Cooper shook his head.
“Alrighty then,” Danni said.
“Ca-can I try again?” Cooper asked.
“No.” Danni replied. She had already turned to climb up the wall before anybody had time to say anything else.
I come back to present time and look down to see Danni is asleep on the floor. I smile and get back to popping the shells out of the gun.
The sun is finally starting to rise when I get the second empty shell canister out of the gun. My hands are blistered and red. They throb like crazy, and I wipe them on the pants I am wearing. That just makes them burn more and I silently swear at the pain.
I hear movement and find Danni on the floor stretching. She rolls onto her stomach and does a single push up before she stands up.
“Anybody else up yet?” She asks
I shake my head.
She shrugs and takes the gun back from me. Examining the outcome of my job she says, “You got them all out.”
