I let out a sigh of frustration as the idiot in the chair next to me bounced his leg up and down. It'd been happening since we sat down— and I was beginning to really get annoyed.
My hand gripped his hand extremely hard, digging my nails into his tattooed skin. "Ronnie," I growled. "For the love of fucking god! Stop it! You're annoying the shit out of me."
His leg stopped bouncing. Ronnie's brown eyes went wide. "Sorry, baby," he said. His eyes tore from mine as he looked down at our hands. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. I'm just..."
I sighed and loosened the grip I had on his hand. "It's okay... I'm just... Hormonal."
Ronnie chuckled as he shook his head and looked back up to meet my eyes. "I know, babe. I've been back for two days— I can tell."
"You're so annoying," I grumbled and rolled my eyes. "What's taking them so long!? Normally they're fast."
"Maybe they're just ru-," Ronnie began, but was cut off by a nurse popping out of the back.
"Jennifer?" She said as she looked over at me. I was glad she remembered my name... I couldn't remember hers.
I smiled as Ronnie stood up and held both hands out. He knew how hard it was beginning to get for me to get out of chairs.
"Thank you," I mumbled as he smiled down at me. We continued to hold hands as we made our way to the nurse. "Are you ready?" I questioned.
A small smile was now playing on his lips. "I've never been more ready. I'm excited to see him," he replied.
"It's a crazy thing," I informed. "It was so wild my first time."
The nurse soon directed us into the back and to the dreaded scale. It was what I hated most about my appointment. My weight never bothered me, but it certainly was beginning to make me insecure.
Once I stepped on it, I held my breath. Oh. Only five more pounds. "I need to stop with the Mac N Cheese."
Ronnie chuckled as he grabbed my hand again. "It's okay, babe. He will be worth it."
I nodded. We were both directed into a room, where I sat on the table, and Ronnie sat down in the seat next to me.
"Now, Jennifer," the nurse began as she sat down on the swivel chair. "Have you been having any issues as of late? This is your 24 week appointment. I noticed you had to reschedule."
I shrugged. "I've been feeling well. My ankles are beginning to swell, but other than that I've been pretty well," I replied. "Just getting a little anxious, I guess."
She smiled. "That's normal, hun. I'm going to send the Doc in in a few. Also, we will have to do another blood test today to ensure everything is in check," she told me.
"Okay," I nodded. "Thank you."
She left the room and I sighed. "Ugh. I fucking hate needles," I mumbled. "Seriously. They fucking suck."
Ronnie laughed this time. "Yet you have tattoos," he noted. "Like seriously?"
"It's not the same," I grumbled. "This way I sit here and watch a needle sit in my arm." I stiffened as I put a hand over my bump. The baby was going wild.
"You crack me up," he said. He raised an eyebrow and looked at me in question. "Is he kicking?"
I smiled and nodded. "Yeah. He's been doing a good job at jabbing me pretty hard," I replied. "He's so small, but holy shit does he have some legs."
"Hah," he replied. "He's gonna be a daredevil, huh!?"
"Just like his daddy," I told him. "I'm gonna be screwed. Last thing I need is two of you, Ronnie."
Ronnie smiled back at me as the doctor came in.
"Jenny! It's great to see you again!" She greeted us with the biggest smile on her face. "Oh! And you must be the daddy! Jenny said she needed to reschedule because you got caught up at work."
Ronnie nodded as he held a hand out. "Yeah, I got a bit busy back in LA. I'm Ronnie."
"It's nice to meet you, Ronnie. Your little boy will be lucky to have you as a father," she said. She shook his hand, then sat down.
"Now, Jen, you're about 16 weeks away from being due," she announced. "The baby should be about the size of a cob of corn. This is where the baby will really begin to grow fast."
I nodded. "He's been kicking a lot now, too," I told her.
"That will happen," she said with a chuckle. "Now are you ready to see your baby boy?" She looked directly over at Ronnie who instantly nodded.
As she began to get me prepped, Ronnie's hand grabbed mine and kept his eyes glued on the screen. The image of our child soon popped up.
Ronnie's hand gripped mine so hard. "Babe," he mumbled. "He... That's our son."
"Yeah," I mumbled as I looked back at him. He had watery eyes as he looked ahead. "He's perfect."
"He is."
As we sat there looking at the screen, the doctor let out a sigh. "Hmm. This shouldn't be a problem, but the position he's in is a bit concerning. He should be able to reposition himself as there is still plenty of time left, though," she informed. "There should be no concern, but we will keep an eye on it at your next couple of appointments."
I gripped Ronnie's hand and nodded. "But... Everything else is good?" I asked, my voice small.
Even if it wasn't that big of a deal, I didn't want to hear that something could go wrong.
"Yes, as you can tell," she began, and turned the sound up, "the heart rate is good as well. Very strong."
I relaxed a bit at that, so did Ronnie.
That was all I wanted. A healthy baby.
"He has the heart of a warrior," Ronnie said. "He will do great things, baby."
I brought his hand up to mine and pressed a kiss to it. "I can't wait until he's here."
