A few days later, Dallas went up to Jay Mountain to tell Johnny and Ponyboy that it was safe to come out of hiding. When he got there, they were both sleeping on the church benches.

"Hey blondie, wake up." Dally said, shaking Ponyboy's head.
"Rise and shine Johnny!" He added while kicking Johnny's bench.
"Hey Dal, heard anything with the cops?" Johnny asked while scratching his back.
"Nah. Ponyboy, here." Dally said while handing him a letter.

Ponyboy started to read it.

"You were pulled into the station?" Ponyboy asked.
"Yeah. Get this. I told then that you were ... You were heading for Texas! Texas man!" Dally said with a laugh.

"Blondie man." Dallas murmured after a while.
"I know I look lousy but don't rub it in." Ponyboy replied.

Dally takes them both to the Dairy Queen a couple miles away for barbecue sandwiches and banana splits.
"You sure are hungry." Dally joked.
"Try baloney for four days." Johnny said with is mouth full.

"We got a spy now." Dally whispered after a long time of silence.
"Cherry ... Cherry what's her name?" Dally asked.
"Cherry Valance!" Ponyboy said a little too eagerly.

"Hey," Johnny finally spoke up after a couple of minutes. "I've been think about this and I'm gonna go turn my self in. It's not fair for Soda and Darry to worry about Ponyboy and it was self defense. Pony and Cherry can testify to that!"
"What? I get you this hideout. A Hangout. I got you a hideout and now you just want to go turn yourselves in?" Dally almost yelled.

He couldn't believe it. He helped Johnny and Ponyboy and now they want to turn themselves in? What if the fuzz decided that it was not self defense and that Johnny was gonna be charged?

"Are you sure this is what you want?" Dally asked Johnny.

"Yeah man." Johnny replied.

Dally drove back to the church so Ponyboy could get his book, Gone With the Wind or something like that. As they approached, the smell of smoke filled the air. Johnny, Ponyboy and Dally looked over and the church was on fire.

"I wonder how that happened?" Johnny asked himself.

Ponyboy instantly jumped out of the car and Johnny followed him. Dally tried to get them back in, but they didn't listen. Dallas finally got out and ran to a window where Johnny and Ponyboy were tossing kids out.

"Get out of there! The roof is breaking!" Dally shouted.

He pulls Ponyboy out and rolled on his arm, to put out the fire.

"DALLLLLLLLLLLLY!" Johnny screamed in pain.

"I'm coming Johnny!" Dally replied.
