As we walk back towards the city, I can't help but stare at the ring on my finger. My body's still exhausted and so I have to use Enterprise to help me support my weight and yet, I've never felt happier. She's smiling too, even through the pain I'm sure the many claw and bite marks that all but completely cover her upper torso, neck and face causes.
In hindsight, I probably overreacted a little but I can't take it back now. If only future me could offer advice to my past self.
Me: I'm sorry.
Enterprise: Hmm?
Me: For hurting you.
As she pulls me closer, I reach up and gently brush my fingers across one of the many lines scarring her face. When she flinches, however, I decide against going through the city. Instead, taking her hand I lead her down a secret path which eventually sees us standing before a fruit tree.
Enterprise: What kind of fruits are these?
Me: Shhh.
Picking one, I bite it to see if it's ready. After confirming that it is, I place it before her lips and tell her to open wide. She complies, but turns the fruit until she's able to bite into the same location I bit previously.
Enterprise: It's-
She's cut off as purple light wraps around her. One by one, her cuts and bruises heal until none remain. The light dissipates soon after in a flash of deep orange.
Enterprise: What was-
Me: Better?
Enterprise: Much.
Grinning, I grab her hand and all but drag her out of the location. Taking even more complex routes than before, we soon clear the garden and return to our original path towards Shanghai. On the way, we continually stop every few minutes as Enterprise reels me in for yet another kiss. It's so absurd that the entire journey I'm little more than a ball of laughter. Still, everything must come to an end and eventually we make it back to the city.
Walking through the streets, Enterprise tenses as though expecting everyone to be hostile towards her but I merely blow off her concern as I rest my head on her shoulder. This doesn't alleviate her concern, however, and as we continue towards the central plaza, she grows even more agitated.
Sighing, I turn her towards me to ensure she's only looking at me. When she turns her head to look at everyone around us, however, I decide to use another tactic.
Me: Look at me.
The minute she does, I press my lips against hers. At first, she's entirely alarmed but before long she relents and returns the kiss with passion. All around us, it's as though the entire city has stopped just to watch. There's complete silence. Music still plays off in the distance but other than the occasional whisper, the world stands still.
As we finally part, gasping for air, it is as though the world erupts in cheer. The sound is deafening, shaking the very foundations of the city. Looking around us, even I'm shocked at just how large a crowd has gathered. Even the girls are here and they're all grinning from ear to ear. Even Yat-Sen winks at me when we lock eyes. Wait...did they plan this or something? No matter, since they are already here I might as well make the announcement now.
Me: She proposed!
The crowd instantly falls silent. Utter disbelief is written across every single face, for miles.
Enterprise: And she said yes!
What ensues can only be described as a stampede as the crowd surges forward. Before we know it, we're being propelled towards the centre of town. There are cheers, singing, dancing, drinking, every activity conceivable to man. In the confusion, Enterprise and I get separated only to be reunited by the crowd once we reach the plaza.
Enterprise is red from head to toe but I can tell she's enjoying herself. Still, she'll need to at the very least be prepared for when I actually introduce her to everyone. Reaching up, I kiss her on the cheek before shifting to whisper in her ear.
Me: Just bear with it a little while longer and then we can have all the fun we want.
She nods, and after a few deep breaths and gulps manages to calm herself down enough that she's no longer steaming hot.
Me: Everyone!
The crowd falls silent. Even the distant music has stopped. Nothing can be heard but the wind and the flapping of Enterprise's eagle's wings as it flies overhead.
Me: This is Enterprise.
All: Welcome Miss Enterprise!
She blushes but manages to respond with a simple phrase, thanking them. Smiling, I'm about to continue when alarms begin blaring. In the distance, the sound of the defence turrets surrounding the harbour can be heard as they open fire. The sky, previously only lit by moonlight, now lights up with streaks of light heading out and coming in. They are missiles. We're under attack.
Me: Everyone, take cover-
I'm cut off as a hand covers my mouth from behind.
????: Found you.
