Sophia smiled at me.
"Ok greenie! Let's get going! Stay here!" She walked out the room. She returned a moment later with a big wooden crate full of water bottles.
"We hand these out once a day to the gladers who can't come get them themselves" she explained. I nodded. I suddenly realised that she was intending me to do this.
"Come on greenie get off that shuck-butt of yours and give me a hand hear" I stood and took the crate from her. We walked down the stairs. Suddenly an ear splitting noise filled the air. A scream. So loud I nearly dropped the crate. Sophia's face was one of complete and utter panic.
"Annie.." She muttered. She looked at me. Her eyes were full of fear. She instantly starting running up the stairs.
"Ummm...greenie...hand those out...I have to go..." She shouted at me. I was speechless. I wanted to follow her. So badly. I also wanted to find Flo. But I knew I had to do my job. So I walked outside the building and looked around at the gladers. At first I looked for Audrey and Lena but I realised quickly they were probably out 'running the maze'. I decided to walk over to where the builders were working. I handed some water bottles out. And then I saw Lou working on something. I walked over. She looked tired.
"Hey" I said. She looked up.
"Oh hey greenie" she managed through heavy breaths. She grabbed a bottle. I realised this was my one, probably only chance to get some answers. About the maze, about the runners, about why we were here but more importantly about this Annie person and why she was screaming.
"Hey Lou...can I ask you something?" I said.
"Shoot greenie" she went back to working.
I took a deep breath in. Lou was one of the people here I did know. But we'd only spoken once and I needed to tread carefully, I didn't know her story, connection with the maze or most importantly how much she knew.
"Well I was just wondering..." I slowly put the empty crate on the ground.
"Uh what happened to Annie?"
Lou stopped what she was doing and looked at me like I was going crazy.
Then she shook her head.
"Ooh greenie...you know I can't tell you that..." She continued with what she was doing. Damn it, I thought.
