We found a near by restaurant to eat. Daisy seemed to be really hungry since she finished her food before us. Alex really didn't touch his burger for a few minutes, but when he did, he took small bites. He was deep in concentration. He must have really been bothered or just trying to ponder on what the nymph had said to us. He does really think a lot though. So it must have been very normal for him. Daisy's attention, though, was on my hands. Her eyebrow arched and pointed to my left hand.
"What's that ring?" Daisy asked. I actually hadn't realized that I was wearing a ring. The ring seemed like a wedding band, only with a small pink sapphire stone in the middle. The ring was actually really pretty to look at. Alex turned to look at what Daisy was talking about. His face instantly became horrified. I couldn't help but become worried myself.
"Where-where did you get that?" His voice cracked as he spoke. I shrugged in confusion and looked at him. His eyes looked up at mine then to the ring. He made it seem as if I was going to die by wearing this ring. It actually made me want to take it off because of his reaction towards it. I did like the ring though. It really matched me.
"What's wrong?" Percy placed his hand on Alex's shoulder in concern. Alex looked over his shoulder to look at Percy. Alex's expression seemed to freak out Percy. Alex didn't speak for a bit.
"I've seen that ring before." Alex gulped. His face became extremely pale, making his skin look like Percy's. "My great-grandma... She made those before." We all waited for an explanation and he seemed to noticed. He sighed. He didn't want to talk about it but he wasn't like Daisy because he began to speak. "Ok. Well when my great-grandma was younger she use to make those types of rings during World War 2. They were very valuable. Everyone wanted them so she would spend countless hours making them." He began to explain. His eyes became watery but he still continued to talk. "She met my great-grandpa, who was a marine at the time, before she started making them. He had given her that ring." He pointed to the one I wore. "Which inspired her to make them. He use to be a blacksmith, if I recall. She fell in love with him and the ring design. So they got married and had kids before he had to be sent to war." He began to choke a bit. This time a tear fell. "That was the last time she saw him.. They had three children, one of them was my grandma.. But-" He stopped and stared at the ring as if it would kill him if it got near him. "-only two of those were ever made. One was my great-grandma's, the other was my great-grandpa's." He looked up at me with a sad expression. "She gave my grandma hers.. And my grandma gave it to me.." He pulls out an identical ring from his pocket. It was on a different chain from his weapon chain. Daisy and Percy stared at the two rings in alarm. I had no idea what was going on. All I knew was that we had matching rings.
Our rings sparkled in the sunlight and they both had the same design with matching gemstone. The color was exactly the same too. Daisy shook her head. She couldn't really think about what was going on. She must not be wanting it to be true.
"Maybe she made more of those without realizing it?" She said, yet she didn't believe herself either. Alex shook his head completely denying her theory.
"If she used sapphire, she would use blue. Never pink." His eyes were fixed on my ring. "And the design on the ring was different from the rest." He pointed to the small thorns around the stone. "These have thorns. The others have a floral type pattern." He looked at his ring and his eyes saw something that made him gasp. "Show me your ring!" He instantly demanded. I did as I was told, yet I didn't really want to. His eyes grew in complete fear. He almost dropped my ring, but caught it in midair.
"I-I knew it." He showed me a tiny inscription in the ring. "J.V." He said. "Yours says 'J.V' which stands for 'Jennifer Velasquez. Mine has a 'C.V' which stands for 'Christopher Velasquez'." Daisy and Percy got close to get a better view. He handed back the ring to me. "How did you get that?" He asked once more. My answer was still the same.
I shrugged and answered, "I don't know. I don't remember my past." Alex glared but then realized I was telling the truth so he sighed. "I'm sorry." I told him. He patted my shoulder.
"Don't worry about it. You must have it for a reason." He looked up to avoid crying. "Take care of it." He turned and walked off to be alone. Percy went with him to comfort him. Daisy stayed with me, but she seemed heartbroken.
"The fates have united you two for a reason." I noticed her eyes got glassy. She was on the edge of crying. "You two.. Would be good together." Her voice cracked and she looked the other way. I took the hint that she didn't want to talk. I sipped my water and sat there awkwardly. My burger had gotten cold but I still took a bite out of it. I heard Daisy crying but when I would comfort her she would tell me everything was ok. She must have regretted asking about my ring. But it was something I really wanted to remember. I wanted to know the background to this ring. I put it back on my left hand. I played with it a bit. My head began to hurt. I was trying too heard to remember. I suddenly heard a loud bang which made me shout. Scaring Daisy half to death. She asked what was wrong but I shook my head instantly.
I was trying too hard and my head knew it.
