Ch. 5

The first thing I saw, were his shoes. They had an "H" in a circle.Slowly I looked up and saw his face. He wore glasses, he had a bit of acne and grease on his face. He had curly dark brown that covered his ears. He also had goggles hanging like a necklace. He seemed to be about an inch or two taller than me. His clothes were dirty too, hand prints painted on his shirt with oil, while his shorts only had smear marks on them. It seemed as if he would use his shorts for a napkin to clean off his hands occasionally.

"She likes you... Normally she tries to bite me." He looks at Mrs. O'leary and smiles at me. "I guess it's cause I have the scent of my dogs at home." He slowly gets closer to Mrs. O'leary and she sniffs then growls a bit. "See." He walks away from her.

"Mrs. O'leary. Relax. He won't hurt you." She looks at me then approaches him and licks him. "I guess she likes you now." I giggled.

He began to laugh. "So you're new here, huh?" He cleans his face with his sleeve.

I nod.

"I remember my first day. It was about three years ago. We were in a war with the roman camp. I was only thirteen. My siblings from the Hephaestus cabin had to supply the weapons or traps." He cracks his knuckles. "I preferred to tinker with the remote control car bombs. Or sometimes just the cars without the bombs." He looks at me and smiles. I couldn't help but get red. Then he stops, "Wait. I haven't asked for your name."

"My name is Michelle." I try to avoid eye contact. "What's yours?"

"Alex Velasquez." He smiles at me. "I'm son of Hephaestus. And you? Whose daughter are you?"

"Hades." I look at him and his face looses color. "What? Is that bad?"

He shakes his head and points behind me. "There's a hellhound. And I don't mean Mrs. O'leary."

Soon I heard a threatening growl and Mrs. O'leary whimpered in pain.

She growls back but her growl was more pain than anger. Alex shouts for me to get back. He pulls out a chain from his pocket and it suddenly changed into a bronze sword.

"Stay back! I got this!" He runs toward the two hellhounds. I stare at the battle. Feeling completely useless.

Mrs. O'leary managed to bite the unfriendly hellhound and Alex slashed at it's hind legs. The hellhound cried in pain. Then it turned at him grabbed at him with it's jaws. I screamed in terror. He tried to dodge roll but the hellhound was faster and got him by his leg. He cried in pain. I couldn't stand there and watch. I began to wonder what my powers were.

I was daughter of Hades, the god of the underworld. I fell to the floor and screamed. Soon, out of the shadows came out a few figures that materialized into a solid form. Each had some type of military outfit. The only thing that didn't match was they had the same type of bronze weapons that Alex had. They looked at me for obvious guidance and instructions. "Help Alex!!" I shouted with a bit of tears.

They saluted me, as if I was a commander and they were my troops, and ran towards the unfriendly hellhound. One of the soldiers stabbed it's leg and the beast dropped Alex.

That was the good part, bad part was he hit his head against a rock.

Mrs. O'leary grabs Alex by his shirt using her teeth. I hoped the soldiers didn't attack her. She came towards me and gestured for me to get on. Once I did, she fled from the forest. I looked back and saw the hellhound dematerialize to dust. Soon we were out of the forest.

"We need help!" I shouted once we were close to other campers. A few rushed to our side and helped Alex. "Can you help him?!" I noticed that tears were running down my cheek.

A guy pat my back and gave me a huge grin. "Don't worry gal. I'm one of the best healers in Apollo's cabin." I looked up at the guy. He was approximately six foot-three inches. And he was muscular. He took out some type of brownie and makes Alex eat it. "Give him time to recover." He looks down at Alex's leg. After a while of looking he announced, "He needs stitches though. Daisy, can you take him to Apollo's cabin?" A short girl, about four inches shorter than me and a foot short than the boy, stepped up. She had dark brown hair, it was tied in a braid going down her right shoulder. She had a darkish skin tone and her eyes were a caramel brown. I noticed her eyes were dfferent from the boy's.

She had a bow strapped to her back. "Do I have to?" She spoke, she had a bit of a Spanish accent. The boy glared at her and she rolled her eyes. "Fine." She carried him on her shoulders. She was pretty strong. She looks at me and smiles, "Hey there newbie, wanna come with? I don't like this kid-" her head tilts towards Alex "-as much. And you seem like a fun person to talk to."

I wipe my tears away and nod in reply.

"Good. I wasn't going to take no for an answer either way." She smirked with complete pleasure. She led me towards cabin 7. A very sunny looking cabin with a few musical notes on the front.

'Apollo's cabin.' I instantly thought. Nico's "guide" to Greek gods really helped me out. I was grateful to him for that.
