Ch. 2
"Protection?" I tilt my head to the side. "From who?" I look around for possible suspects. The only suspicious person was Grover.
"Not who. From what." He clears his throat and his eyes move slowly to the side. I follow his gaze. A tall man, about six foot tall with a suit, stared at us. He seemed to stare at Grover more though. Grover gulped. "We have to go.." He grabs my arm.
My biggest mistake was hesitating. The man began to walk towards us. His face cracked into a creepy long grin. Grover bleated in fear. I knew we were in trouble if we didn't leave soon.
"We really have to go! He still has a grudge from that one time.." Grover began to shake a bit. I wasn't going to just stand there and stare. We ran for the closest exit.
"It was a good deal!" The man shouted out from behind us. "Your friend, Perseus Jackson, will pay!" The doors slammed shut behind us.
For a guy with a bad leg, he sure could run. We didn't stop running until we got near a van. The van read "Delphi Strawberry Service". He slid open the door and gestured me to get inside.
"A fruit van?" I looked at the words in complete confusion. "You run a strawberry farm? I thought we were going to some camp."
"It's a cover! Just get in! Hurry! He's not far behind." Grover's legs shook until one fell off. I screamed in panic. "I'm sorry! That happens at times. Hurry!" He really didn't give me time since he pushed me in.
"Hey!" I scowled then he threw me his leg.
"Take care if that please." He closes the van door and enters the passenger's seat. I tossed the leg off to the side with disgust. "Argus, hit it!"
The driver nodded and the can started. I look through the back window and see a tall figure of a man. "Who is he?" Grover looks through his mirror and bleats. He didn't have time to explain because the driver, Argus, hit the gas. Grover's head hits his head against the seat. I wasn't as lucky. I got to taste the window's surface first hand. The man was starting to shrink as we sped off. Before I know it, we stop by a hill with a tall pine tree.
Grover and the driver escort me up the hill. Grover would glance back every so often. Finally he bleated again and Argus panicked. Yet he didn't have to turn like Grover. My curiosity took over and I snuck a peek. Behind us was the tall man.
Great a personal stalker.
Beside him was an even taller and bigger guy. He had beefy arms and legs. He held a stick with pointed ends, not something I would like to get hit with. Both the guys grinned.
Creepy much? I noticed that my personal stalker's friend only had one eye.
"What the?" I mumble. Mr. Beefy kept at us faster than the other guy.
"Go into camp!" Grover's voice cracks. "Percy should take care of those guys!" As I ran down the hill, a boy was running up towards me.
We managed to make eye contact. He had sea-green eyes with messy hair. As if he had just woken up. The boy also had a pen in his hand. I stopped at stared. He took off the cap of the pen and it instantly got bigger. My eyes grew bigger too. A sword? He patted my back and said, "Go to the Big House. Chiron is waiting." Then, he turned and yelled a battle cry. He ran off towards Mr. Beefy and my stalker. Grover had lost another leg because Argus had the leg in his hands.
"Come on." Grover grabbed my arm softly and he sounded a bit more relaxed. "Percy has it under control. He's dealt with monsters all the time." He smiles and we walk toward a building.
I first got a look at my surroundings. The scenery was breath taking, and it smelled a lot like strawberries. The lake was sparkling from the morning sunlight. I caught a glimpse of cabins and other campers. Everyone was either wearing an orange shirt or a purple one. Then there was a rock climbing wall with lava coming down.
"Don't worry. You won't die from the heat. No one has. Well..." Grover's voice faded. I gulped. There was no way I was getting on that, ever.
On the porch of the Big House was a man in a wheelchair. His legs were covered in a blanket and he wore a shirt that said "My other car is a Centaur". He gives me a very friendly and welcoming smile. As if he was seeing his grandchild walk their first steps.
"Welcome." His voice sounded timeless. I stared at his shirt.
"What's a centaur?" I dumbly ask. He laughs and Grover clears his throat.
"Excuse me. It's been a while since I was asked that. My dear, I'm a centaur." He smiles and placed his hand on his chest, he expected me to truly know what he meant. I laugh nervously just to avoid more awkwardness. Suddenly he gets up and his body seems to grow five times it's size. He was half horse and half man.
"Horse man?" I look at Grover, who now had furry legs. "What the?!"
"Now don't start calling my goat boy! Blah-ha-ha! I'm a satyr!" Grover crosses his arms in anger.
"I'm Chiron. I'm the camp's activity director." Chiron smiles. I stared at him with wide eyes.
So many questions I wanted to say but I managed to ask only one, "Why am I here?" He looks at me and grins.
"You're a half-blood, my girl."
