SOFIA'S POV
Ioane requests for a booster seat for his daughter. The restaurant staff brings out a high chair, and he sets Leilani inside. She's sitting in between me and her father. When the waitress comes by, Ioane orders his french fries for his daughter. He orders the same lobster dish that James and I ordered for ourselves.
"So what have you two been up to today?" He asks us.
"Paragliding!" I tell him. "I got to see all of Maui."
"No way, I've always wanted to go," Ioane says.
"You've never been?" I ask him.
"No, never had the time."
"We should go! It's so much fun."
"Let me know whenever you're free to go,
and I'll drop Leilani at her grandparents.""We should do something with Leilani! If you're comfortable that is," I add, blushing. Maybe he doesn't want me in his kid's life right now. That's perfectly reasonable. We've only gone out twice together.
"We could do the beach tomorrow. Does that work?"
"Of course. I would love to go to the beach with you both. We can make sandcastles," I tell Leilani, tickling her belly. She giggles.
I notice that James is quiet throughout most of lunch. I try bringing him into the conversation a few times, but he only gives one-word answers. Case in point:
"James, what did you think of paragliding?"
I expect him to give an elaborate answer, especially since he told me it was his favorite part of the trip so far. Instead, all he says is, "it was fun."
Ioane looks at him expectantly, waiting for him to say more but he never does.
"Do you want any dessert?" I ask James.
"No," is all he says.
Is he upset with me? Or does he not like Ioane? But what has Ioane ever done to him? He doesn't have a reason to dislike the Hawaiian man.
Ioane and I continue chatting about Leilani. Apparently, he's going to have to put her in daycare soon so he can go back to school. He wants to be a nurse. "What did you major in back in college?" He asks me.
"Finance. My mom was a personal financial advisor, so I thought I would follow in her footsteps. I guess that was pretty stupid, considering how everything with my dad turned out."
"What happened with your dad?" Ioane asks.
My voice comes out quiet. "He gambled all our money away. We were really struggling there for a while," I tell him.
I don't mention that we had to downsize to an apartment or that my dad spent everything I made in casinos. Or that I had to marry James in exchange for money to pay off his debts.
"I'm sorry," Ioane says. "I can't imagine."
I give him a small smile, unsure of what to say at this point. "I feel so stupid for not seeing what my dad was doing with our money. He hid it from me, but I still feel like I should have seen it coming," I say.
"You didn't tell me that," James says.
"You never asked," I tell him.

JAMES' POVHearing my wife open up to a complete stranger instead of me pisses me off to no end. Why does she feel comfortable talking to him about her dad and not me? We've never once talked about our families with each other, unless it was me complaining about my overbearing parents forcing me to get married.
Ioane has been purposely ignoring me this entire dinner. Sofia had tried to include me in the conversation at some points, but I'm over pleasantries with this man. I'd rather keep my mouth shut than snap at him in front of her. I'm counting down the minutes until dinner is over, and when Sofia finally finishes eating, I demand the check. I pay for all three of us, much to my chagrin. It's not like I can't easily afford it, but I don't want to help that fucker.
Sofia and I head back home, and she's quiet the whole way back. When we're about five minutes away from the cottage, she says, "Are you mad at me?"
Am I mad at her? I guess I am pissed that she opened up to that fucker instead of me. "Why did you tell Ioane all of that stuff about your dad?" I ask her.
She turns to look at me and frowns. "What do you mean?"
"I'm saying that information about your financial life with your dad is very private, and you're going around telling a practical stranger your business."
"Ioane isn't a stranger," she says, irritating me further.
"He's not your family, so he shouldn't know."
"It's my life, not yours," she tells me. "I can talk to whoever I want about it. You can't control who I talk to James."
My grip on the steering wheel tightens. "It's our life now. Everything in your personal life affects mine, and I'm not comfortable with you telling another man private information about you."
"It's not like I told him I married you for money."
I clench my jaw, turning into the driveway. "Whatever Sophia. Do whatever the hell you want," I snap.
She flinches, and I immediately regret snapping at her. I want to apologize, but my mouth doesn't move. I'm too stubborn to be the one to say sorry to her first.
She gets out of the car before I can even park it, and my jaw drops as she jumps out of the moving vehicle. Sophia heads inside, and I sigh, wondering how this day started off so well and went wrong.
When I get inside, Sophia is nowhere to be found. It isn't until I check the glass wall outside by the fire pit that I locate her. She's sitting around the fire, huddled up on the bench.
I stare at her small frame, debating whether to go out and apologize. This is our first fight. I couldn't help but get jealous about her getting closer to Ioane, so I basically instigated the fight. Not that I feel like I'm in the wrong. She really shouldn't be telling her personal information to random men.
I feel so wound up that I decide to get a drink at the bar on the beach. Once I get there, a short, flat-chested brunette begins hitting on me. I debate whether or not it's worth it to flirt back, and I decide that it wouldn't hurt to get laid.
I buy her a drink, and an hour later we're stumbling back to her place. She rips my clothes off like a maniac, and I don't even bother pulling her dress off. I slide it over her hips and slide into her from the back while she bends on her hands and knees. Immediately, I begin fucking her hard until she falls apart screaming.
