SOFIA'S POV
Sleep doesn't come easy to me. I don't actually have trouble falling asleep, but staying asleep is another problem. I wake up again from the same nightmare as the night before, screaming.
James flips on the light sitting on his nightstand. "Bad dream again?"
"I'm so sorry," I sniffle. My heart is racing in my chest. "Go back to sleep. I'm going to get a glass of water."
"Sofia—"
He tries to get me to stay, but I get up anyway. My feet pad over to the kitchen where I fill up a tall glass and gulp the liquid down. My heart seems to slow, and I climb back under the covers of our bed. "Come here," James says.
I turn over in my sleep, debating if I should listen to him. I don't want to ruin his sleep just because mine is messed up.
"Sofia, come here right now," he demands.
The authoritative voice he takes on pushes me closer, and I'm surprised when he throws a leg over mine and spoons me from behind. His arm wraps around my waist. "Go to sleep," he grunts. "I'm right here. And I'm fine. I promise."
"Promise?"
"Yes," I promise, he tells me.
Hours later, we wake up in that same position when my phone goes off. I pick James' arm up off me and lean over to get my phone off the nightstand. "Hello?" I ask.
"How is James? He isn't taking our calls," his mother informs me.
I look over at my husband, mouthing that his mom is on the line. He gestures for the phone. "I can actually give the phone to him if you'd like."
"That would be wonderful," she says.
I hand my phone to James and immediately hear the sound of his mother snapping at him. James rolls his eyes, and I look at him disapprovingly. He shouldn't make light of his accident.
"Yes mom, I understand. No, I'm not going to stop drinking. Yes, I'll be more careful next time," he says. The whole time, he never apologizes to her like he did to me.
"Yes, she took care of the DUI for me while I was in the hospital. I don't know if she needs to pay them off. You want me to ask? Okay," he adds. James looks at me. "How much do we owe the police department here?"
I shake my head. "Nothing," I tell him. "Ioane's wife's cousin did me a solid."
He frowns, but tells his mother that she won't need to send any money down. She sounds relieved. "Thank god for Sofia," I hear her say. "Give her back the phone."
He hands me the cellular device. "Hi again," I greet her.
"Thank you so much dear. You were such a great help to us. I don't know what I would have done without you," she says.
"Elizabeth, I—"
"Call me mom," she interrupts.
My heart stops in my chest. I haven't called anyone mom since my own mother passed away. Tears prick my eyes. "Okay. Mom, you don't have to thank me. James and I are a team now."
"Thank god for that. I'll see when you get back into town honey."
I end the call with her, biting my lip nervously. It feels so weird to call Elizabeth mom, but it's also really nice.

JAMES' POV"Mom asked you to call her mom?" I ask Sofia.
She nods her head. I open my arms, suddenly overwhelmed with how much affection I hold for her. She took care of me when I was sick, got rid of my DUI, and watched movies with me all day long just because I wanted to do that with her. How lucky was I?
Sofia sits down on the bed and tucks herself into my chest. She's about to say something when her phone goes off again. This time, it's the fucker on the line. "Hey Sofia," I hear him drawl.
"Hi Ioane! Tell your wife's cousin thanks again for me," she says.
"It's no problem," I hear his muffled voice say. "Listen, would you want to come over and watch a movie today? We could do dinner?"
Listening to him hijack my day with her pisses me off more than anything. Fortunately, Sofia looks at me before she replies.
"Can we just hang out together?" I ask her.
"Of course," she mouthes. I can't resist giving her a kiss on the cheek in response.
"Listen, Ioane. I'm still taking care of James for a bit. Can we do a rain check? Tomorrow should work for me."
I groan internally, realizing that I'm going to eventually have to let Sofia go. He says something I can't hear, and then she replies.
"Sounds good. I'll see you tomorrow. Bye," she says.
Sofia turns back to me. "So what do you want to do today?" She asks.
"We can go to the beach."
"Okay. Just be careful not to get sand in your stitches or something. I don't want you getting an infection."
We change into our swimsuits, and I watch as Sofia ties a sarong around her waist. Then she heads to the kitchen, where she begins to cut a bunch of fruit and put them into Tupperware. When she's done making sandwiches and snacks, she sets everything in our picnic basket. Then we head to the car and drive down. I notice Sofia is quiet around the bend where I got into my accident, and guilt creeps up in my gut.
When we get to the beach, Sofia sets up the towels again. "Do you want me to put sunscreen on you?" She asks, looking at how my arm is set in the sling.
"That would be nice," I tell her, realizing that her small hands are about to be all over my body.
She squeezes a large helping of the lotion onto her palms, and then she rubs her hands into my pecs. I close my hands while she rubs the sunscreen all over, her thumbs circling my nipples. "Getting a little frisky, are we?" I tease her.
She laughs. "Shut up."
Her hands work the lotion into my abs, rubbing smooth circles along the skin. Then her hands start gently working the lotion along my biceps. "Turn," she says.
I obey her direction, and she begin massaging my back with the lotion. "Want me to get your back?" I ask her.
"Can you?" She says.
"I still have one good arm," I tell her. I squirt the sunscreen onto my palm, and then I kneel over her while she lays flat on her stomach, undoing her bikini straps.
When I'm all done, she leaves the straps undone so she can tan evenly. Sofia is the sexiest sight, bare back and curvy ass glowing in the sun. I watch her with heavy lidded eyes as she closes her eyes and soaks in the heat.
"Are you going to stare at me all day or tan?" She asks.
I laugh, laying down next to her on the beach. "Fine, I'm on the towel next to you now," I tell her.
"Good."
