SOFIA'S POV
James doesn't come home all night. When I wake up the next day, his side of the bed is left unmade. Did he go out and cheat on me? It's the first thought that crosses my mind.
I shouldn't have gotten so upset with him for telling me to run off with Ioane. His feelings were hurt. After all, I was confessing my love for another man. But it wasn't like I was attempting to stay in touch with Ioane. I was making an effort to get closer to James. Up until recently, things had been going well between us.
I make myself a cup of coffee, biting my lip nervously as I think of the possibility that James slept with another woman. He wouldn't cheat on me, would he?
I try to watch TV to distract myself, but it doesn't work. I'm in the middle of watching Gossip Girl when the home phone rings.
"James? You left your cell at my house."
It's a woman's voice. "H-hello?" I ask hesitantly.
"Oh, hi! Is the Sofia?"
"Yes this is. Who am I speaking to?"
"It's Mara. James spent the night at my place. I know you two have been having your share of problems. He just left around forty five minutes ago. I assumed he'd be back home now."
Jealousy spikes through my veins. His personal assistant was calling our house. And he had slept with her before. Why had he gone over there?
"Did you and James, um, did you two—" I can't even bring myself to say it.
"Let's just say he's a good lay," she says, sending my heart plummeting.
I hang up the phone immediately, tears streaming down my cheeks. Why did I ever trust him to be faithful to me? I should've left with Ioane while I had the chance.
I get out my suitcase and start throwing all of my things inside. That's it. I can't stay here with a man who has cheated on me. I'm sealing up my suitcase and dragging it down the hall when James walks through the door. He looks at me with confusion.
"Sofia, what are you—"
"Get out of my way!" I snap. I call an Uber, dragging my luggage outside. James tries to stop me, grabbing my hand. I rip it from his grasp.
"Don't ever talk to me again," I tell him. "I don't want to hear from you or see you or speak to you."
I shove my suitcase into the car, and then I climb inside. It takes me all the way home, to my real home, back where my father lives. I don't miss the bewildered expression on James' face as we drive past, and I put his cheating ass out of my mind.

JAMES' POVI can't possibly comprehend what on earth has possessed Sofia into packing up her things and moving out of the apartment. Only a handful of her clothes are still here. She's packed everything from her toothbrush to her towel, and then she's taken off.
The face she made when she saw me has been burned into my mind. I will never forget how disgusted she was, staring into my soul.
I try calling her, but then I realize I left my phone at Mara's. Great. Just perfect.
I call Mara from the home phone, telling her to just bring my cell phone to work tomorrow. Then I attempt to dial Sofia, who never picks up no matter how many times I call. Her father doesn't answer either, which leaves me no choice but to drive to her father's myself. It's a two hour drive, but I manage it.
Unfortunately, when I arrive, no one answers the door. I stay parked outside the house for hours, wondering if she's even home. But if she isn't at her dad's, then where would she be? I ring the doorbell for the millionth time, and I finally get a response. It's Sofia's father.
"She doesn't want to talk to you boy," the man says. He keeps the door open only a crack. I can see a slim portion of his face.
"Just give me one chance. I don't even know what I did wrong."
"Get off my property now. You've hurt my girl enough. You're lucky you're still standing."
"Your girl? You're the one who sold her to me. She's not yours anymore."
"Get the fuck off my property," her dad yells.
"You're lucky I don't knock your teeth out old man. If any one of us is hurting Sofia, it's fucking you. Get your shit together," I tell him.
I storm off, getting in my car and speeding away. What the fuck is her dad on about? How did I hurt her bad enough to make her run away?
I go home and drown myself in my work, allowing myself to get swept up in paperwork. It's torture working from home with Sofia not there. Any second now, I expect to hear her peals of laughter bouncing through the hallways. I smell the scent of her Chanel perfume on her pillow, and I see her bottles of shampoo in the shower. Over the next few weeks, I begin to shower with her shampoo just to remember what she smells like.
Time blurs without her, and somehow the next three weeks feel like nothing. I get no morning kisses, and I stop making morning coffee. The only thing I do is work and drink. It's the longest I've ever gone without having sex.
It isn't until I'm walking in late to the office one day that I overhear Mara.
"Yeah, I told her he was a good lay to get her away from him, and it worked. They haven't been together since. I would know, since all he does is work nonstop these days. Before, he was rushing to get out of here. Now he never leaves."
That's when it clicks.
Mara told Sofia I slept with her that one night she picked me up from Fire and Ice. It was the only explanation.
I have to refrain from squeezing her throat. "Did you fucking lie to my wife about sleeping with me?"
"What difference does it make about when we slept together? We've been together for a while now."
"No, we haven't been you delusional bitch. Get the fuck out of my sight. You're fired," I tell her.
Her jaw drops. "You can't be serious. We've been sleeping together for weeks. I tell your wife and all of a sudden you have the audacity to act like you're the saint? You've been the one cheating on her this whole time."
"You don't know my life," I tell her. "Now fuck off."
I have to tell Sofia the truth as soon as possible now.
