Chapter 20

Saved by Two Chapter Twenty:

The meeting with Eva went well from what May told me. I asked Avlon if she liked her and she smiled a real smile and said yes.

To say i was thanking the Lord was an understatement. I was praising him because she actually liked Eva. Eva did nothing that she didnt like and Avlon even told me she was pretty before falling asleep. I was so ecstatic i had to call Mark that nigh after she dosed off to tell him it was a hit. He was excited but Eva was even more excited. She said that she liked Avlon more than she did May.

She made sure to make me promise not to tell May before i got off of the phone and i promised not that i really wanted to.

Mark was just happy because she liked his wife and he hopes that she will grow to like and trust him because Mark and Wayne are my best friends so she needs to like them because they are always with me.

So that night i went to sleep with a smile on my face and woke up with one this morning. I kiss Avlon on her head before heading downstairs to make some calls.

Going into the office i call the Branscums. They are Shadow's owners and she is ready to go home. "Hello?"

"Mrs.. Branscum this is Dallas Carter and i was calling about Shadow."

"Oh hello." she says excitedly. "How is Shadow doing?"

"She is great actually. Walter informed me yesterday she should be ready this time tomorrow if you wanted to pick her up."

"Oh that is great. Cathy will be so happy." she gushes and i hear her talking to someone.

"Well i'll see you at elev tomorrow. Have a blessed day Mrs. Branscum"

"You to Mr. Carter." she says hanging up the phone.

Right after the phone hangs up it rings. "Hello thank you for calling The Ranch this is Dalla Carter speaking."

"Mr. Carter." a mans voice i have never heard before says over the line.

"This is him speaking." I say confused because i just said it was me.

"This is George Williams."

My eyes widen as i recognise the last name. "Mr. Williams how have you been sir and the wife?"

"We are fine son but thats not what im calling for." he quickly dismisses me. "I want to see my granddaughter." I sigh loudly knowing that he would say that. "Before you try and say shes not there Zoe has informed me that she is and i want to see my gran daughter."

"Mr. Williams i am a man of God so i would not have lied to you. What i would have said and am saying is that i am sorry but Avlon is not ready to meet new people and especially so many at once. She is afraid of men and would not accept you easily even if you are her family."

He scoffs and says "You may be a man of God but im not and i will see her. I didnt even know my granddaughter existed untill last night and i didnt know my daughter no longer breathed air untill last night so you can understand my persistence."

I rub my head understanding where he is coming from.If i didnt know i had a grand daughter i would want to see her to but thats not how it works. "Yes sir i can but i have to think of what is best for Avlon and this is not it. I can talk with her and see if she wants to meet you and if not i can do nothing about that."

"I will see my gran daughter no matter what Mr. Carter. You may ask her and ill call back in two days. If she says no ill still see her." he threatens and i dont really like it.

"You will do no such thing Mr. Williams. If Avlon does not want to see you then you will have to wait untill she does. No i have work to do Mr. Williams you can call back in two days but don't get your hopes up." and with that i hang up the phone because i couldnt say anything else to him without getting angrier than i already am.

"Who was that?" a little voice asks and i jerk my head around to meet Avlons green curious eyes.

Scooting out from my desk i pat my knee. Avlon looks at it and the me and walks over to me sitting on my lap. "You know you have family right?" i ask her making sure she remembered i may have told her multiple times but sometimes we dont want to remember. She frowns but nos her head anyways. "Zoe told her family about you adn your mother." I wait for this to sink in and when it does she looks to me in horror. I nod sadly and play with a strand of her hair. "That was your grandfather and he wants to meet you."

Right away Avlon shakes her head. "No i dont want to meet him. Momma never talked about them and their has to be a reason."

I nod in understanding but that doesnt mean she shouldnt meet them. "Yes angle she probably had a reason but dont you want to find out that reason?" i ask her and she just stares at me.

She turns her head looking out the window in my office. "what if it was a bad reason." she mumbles.

Rubbing her back in comfort i reassure her. "If its a bad reason God will handle it baby. He may have already handled it you just have to talk to your family and find out that reason."

"I want to go to church first." she states and i smile at her glad that shes accepting to meet them.

My eyes shine with hope as i ask "So is it a yes on the cookout?" Avlon stands and starts toward the door.

"Zoe's not coming." she states as she walks out of the office.

Picking up the phone i call my brother. "Brother." he greets.

"Guess what?" I ask and he chuckles telling me he doesnt like that game. With a sigh i say "Avlon agreed to the cookout as long as Zoe's not there."

"Really?" he asks surprised and shocked and i imagine him looking like me when she told me the news.

"Really so how about Tomorrow i want to do it before she can change her mind." I odnt think she would change her mind because once she has it made up she sticks with it and i love that about her.

"Tomorrow it is brother. What do you want me to bring?"

"Your wife and your kids." i state with a duh tone.

Houston chuckles humorlessly and then hits me with a fact. "May will probably be over there early cooking."

"Right." i sigh and then smile thinking about my Angle. "Avlon would help she needs to learn to so she can fend for herself when im not home."

"I know what you mean brother and thats sexist." Houston says amused.

Shaking my head i laugh saying "No brother i meant what i said. Anyways i need to go see if Shadow is ready so i can get her all set up before tomorrow morning."

He says his goodbyes and i slip my boots on to go to the stalls. Walter is there with Shadow in the training pin. "Have you seen Avlon? i ask him because i thought she would be with Sunny in his pin.

Walter looks up nd nods toward the barn. "Said something about a baby."

"Rogger." i say nodding and then look over Shadow. "The Branscums will be to get her tomorrow."

"Great she will be ready."

Sighing i rest again the fence and look to Walter. "Look Walt i know shes your wife and all but Avlon doesnt like her." He nods in understanding but has a small frown. "We're having a cookout tomorrow and she only agreed on it if Zoe wasn't there. She would want you to come but we understand if you dont because Zoe is your wife."

"This is hard." Walter states and i can understand how it would be. Avlon is like his daughter but Zoe is his wife. The two women he loves dont like each other and its hurting him i can see it.
