Chapter 18

Saved by Two Chapter Eighteen:

"I don't like this box." Avlon whines holding onto the door for dear life.

"Baby it's a truck." i chuckle and she looks over at me with a scowl. "C'mere." i say unbuckling her seat belt. With wide eyes she scoots over to me. I sling my arm around her shoulder holding her to me tightly. "Better?"

She nods and lays her head on my chest grabbing my hand. "What is that?" she asks pointing out of the windshield.

"The little white one is a sheep and the gray one is a goat."

She points to the field across from the farm and asks "What are those?"

"That's corn. Do you remember eating corn?"

She nods excitedly and says "I like corn."

"You made that obvious." i chuckle remembering she ate three cobs in about two minutes.

Avlon bumps me and i just smile down at her before looking back up at the road. "Ohh those are birds." she says excitedly pointing at the sky. "Momma said those were the only animals that fly." she states proudly.

"What animals did your momma tell you about?" i ask wanting to get her mind off of the bumpy ride.

"She told me about zoo animals. She said that their in cages and that the keepers drug them." she looks really sad and i frown at her. Why would her momma tell her that.

"What animals are there?"

"Zebra's, giraffes. she said those were her favorite because they have long necks." she explains and then she looks over to me. "Can we go to the zoo?"

"There are lots of people at the Zoo Angle."

"Oh." she says sadly adn i squeeze her against me.

"When your ready we can go to the Zoo." she nods as i park the car infront of May and Houston's house. "Are you ready to go in?"

Avlon nods and gets out of my side of the truck. She takes my hand and grips it tightly before letting go. I put my arm around her shoulders and we walk up to the front door. I knock and then open it walking in. "Hunny i'm home." I shout and then i hear my brothers obnoxious laughter.

"In the living room brother." he calls but his voice is getting closer to us.

When i turn the corner into the living room hes standing there with May. "Avlon it's nice to see you again."

Avlon gives him a smile and then looks up at me. I juts look back confused wondering what shes asking me.

Surprising us all Avlon steps out of the protection of my arms and stands infornt of my brother. She surprises us more when she asks "Can i give you a hug?" she has never talked infront of them and if she did she whispered quiet enough so they couldn't hear her.

Houston nods with a small smile. He looks over at me with shocked eyes and i shrug my shoulders because i dont know whats going on. "Don't move okay?" she asks him quietly and again he nods watching her closely. Quickly Avlon steps forward and wraps her arms around his waist before stepping back to me.

It was a quick hug but the fact is it was still a hug. "You did good Angle." i mumble kissing the top of her head. I can tell shes a little uncomfortable so i say "I'm hungry."

"When arn't you hungry?" May asks as leading us to the kitchen.

I scoff at her. "I'm not always hungry."

Avlon giggles and looks up at me. "Yes you are." she states and i smile at her.

"May needs to teach you how to cook something other than cereal."

"Coco puffs are good." she states with a frown.

"Yes but their not healthy to eat for every meal."

Avlon shrugs and sits beside me at the table. Houuston sits at the head beside me and May gets us something to eat. "Have you thought about going to church yet Avlon?" May asks cutting up some chicken.

Nodding Avlon says "I want to go but im still not comfortable with alot of people all at once." She looks around the kitchen and i notice that she is a little uneasy and theirs only three of us in the room.

"I've got an idea." Houston says proudly and i look at him scared. "We can have a BBQ this weekend with the guys and their wives or girlfriends and the kids."

Avlon shakes her head right away. "I dont like Zoe." I frown and turn to look at her. She shakes her head before i can even say anything "No Dallas." she says sternly and im surprised because this is the first time shes gotten stern with me.

Raising an eyebrow i say "Baby your going to have to talk to her again sometime."

"I don't like her Dallas."

"Okay Avlon." i sigh looking at Houston. He has an amused look on his face and i just stare at him with a dead pan expression.

"Don't call me that." She says with a pout and i look at her with a raised eyebrow.

"You're being unreasonable Avlon. Zoe was angry for a reason and it wasn't at you." When i see her facial expression i knew i shouldn't have said that. Right when it left my mouth i knew i shouldn't have said it but sometimes i say what i think before stopping to think about it.

She looks at me like she just met a whole new person. Her eyes widen and i see her bottom lip start to quiver. 'Oh Father God in heaven in Jesus name i ask that you give me strength and the right words to speak.' 

"Angle." i say softly and reach out to touch her but she pulls back from me. "Angle im sorry i didnt mean it like that."

She stands and says "You did or you would not have said it. Being unreasonable to me is not giving you a bite of my coco puffs and thats still something hard for me. Before i came here i ate bread every day. Sometimes it would have green and white stuff on it but that didn't matter. Other times it would be as hard as a rock but if i was hungry i had to eat it."

"Before i came here i got beaten and raped everyday of my life and all by a man that was suppose to be my father. So sorry if i dont want to see a woman that was angry with me." i try to say im sorry again but she cuts me off. "Don't say anything Dallas. This is the first time im angry and your gonna let me be angry. Zoe was angry with me because i wouldnt tell her something i didnt want to. It's my place to tell her how my mother was killed and if i dont want to i dont have to. So tell me now am i being unreasonable?"

"Angle-" i go to say but she cuts me off.

"Oh so it's Angle now?" she questions with a red face and i raise a brow at her i've never seen her like this but im glad she is. It's showing who she is but never got to be in that basement.

I stand infront of her and pull her into me. "Get off me Dallas! Let me go!" she says fighting against me but i just hold her still holding her head into my chest as she begins to cry. She still beats on my chest but her tears are making her weaker making her baby beats turn into mosquito bites.

"I'm sorry." i whisper to her because i truly am sorry. I didnt mean for it to come out how it sounded. I just meant that she needed to talk to Zoe. "I just want you to talk to Zoe Angle. She's your aunt and you have a grandma and grandpa and an uncle. Their your family Angle and take it from me you'll always want your family."

"Momma didnt." she sobs and i shush her running my fingers through her hair.

"Did she tell you why?" she shakes her head and i say "You need to find out why and talking to Zoe is the only way Angle." she doesnt say or do anything so i add "We can do it when your ready theirs no rush."

I look up and Houston looks regretful and mouths "Sorry." I shake my head at him because its not his fault i shouldn't had said what i did and then she wouldnt have gotten angry.

"I think your burning your food." i mouth to a crying May when i smell and see the smoke.

May's eyes widen and she looks at the stove. "My food." she cry's ruining the sad moment. Houston chuckles and i smile.

"Avlon baby do you want to get some air?" Nodding she gets out of my hold and leaves me standing there regretting everything i said.
