A/N: words: 900 (an even number ahh) anyways, this trope is my favourite thing ever and i wrote this in like under an hour and im feeling great. Anyways, enjoy!

Sam and Bucky walk into the jet, both fuming with anger. Sam sits down, throwing the shield and walk pack beside him, and shoots a glare at Bucky. "I can't believe you did that," Sam mutters, looking between the floor and Bucky. Bucky breathes out a humourless laugh and looks at Sam. "Excuse me? I threw myself in front of you, and I get this?" Bucky knew he shouldn't say this, he knew that Sam was just concerned for him, but he couldn't bear to watch Sam collapse to the ground. Lifeless. Bucky couldn't bear to even think of it. He shook his head, looking at Sam again. "You could've been shot. And hurt" Sam shouts back, choking on his words. Bucky's eyes go wide, a look of disbelief washes over his face. "If I wasn't there, you could've been shot too" Bucky shoots back, shocked that Sam can't see that. Sam shakes his head. "And I could've handled it, what, with my dumb serum. But Sam, you couldn't have" Bucky tells him, and realizes that may have not been the best phrasing. His hand rushes to his mouth.

Sam's eyes widen, his face burning with anger. "What, so because I don't have the serum, I automatically need protecting Barnes? Is that what you're telling me" Sam yells, jumping up in this fit of anger and frustration. How could Bucky think so little of him? Especially touching on his insecurities. Bucky knew it all, he was always there for Sam. He told Sam that he deserved this, he was the right person. And now, that's gone. A lie, a mask, maybe.

Bucky knew he messed up. He saw Sam's face, practically read his mind. He knew that Sam was self-conscious about his strength, if he's fit for being Cap, literally. And Bucky has told him countless times that if anyone deserves that shield, it was him, serum or no serum. And now, all those words stripped away, all the 3 am talks in the kitchen, stripped away. Bucky stutters out an apology. "Sam, you know I didn't mean it like that," Bucky tells him, his eyes catching Sam's tears rolling down his cheeks. Sam chokes out a humourless, hurt laugh. "Sure Bucky. Sure" Sam says simply, sitting back down, head in hands, tears falling freely.

Bucky looks up at the ceiling, his vision becoming blurry with tears. He really messed up this one. Bucky took a look at Sam a few moments later, and he couldn't bear to look at him. He caused this, without meaning to. He was petty, he was careless. But he cares for Sam. He didn't want him to be shot. He could've died, and he couldn't live in a world without Sam Wilson. He couldn't imagine it. He couldn't imagine living without the soothing and genuine laugh, the bright smile, the courage, the strength, the steadying hands, the calm voice, the chocolate eyes. He couldn't allow that to leave him, not yet, not ever.

Sam was still too angry to take a look at Bucky, furious for several reasons now. First, the shot incident, now this. He couldn't believe Bucky had jumped in front of him. He couldn't imagine what would've happened if Bucky did die. He needed Bucky. He needed the soothing 3 am words, the smile that could light up a room, the softness of his singing voice, the laugh that erupted from him. And all of that was almost torn away. He couldn't let that happen, and he almost did. He couldn't believe himself. All of this makes his words a bigger punch to the gut. Deep down, Sam knew Bucky didn't mean it. Still stung. Sam was too angry, and tired, to fully comprehend his emotions. He knew it. He still didn't know why Bucky jumped in front of him.

"Why'd he do it?" Sam asks bitterly, finally looking up. Bucky turns his head to face Sam, an eyebrow raised. Sam sighs. "Why'd you jump in front of me? It was pretty stupid," Sam clarifies, and Bucky shuts his eyes. "I'm sorry that you consider saving your live stupid" Bucky quips back sarcastically, something in his head telling him to stop. Sam's jaw clenches. "I could've handled it" Bucky rolls his eyes, knowing this was going in the same direction. "What if you didn't?" Bucky all but yells. Sam gets up, furious. He's not answering the question. "Why did you do it? It was dumb and irresponsible and-"

"Because I love you"

Sam's mouth closes, and Bucky's eyes widen. It was true, he meant it with every fibre in his body, he loved Sam. He always has. He just didn't intend to say it now and here. Sam locks eyes with Bucky, making sure neither look away. Sam swallows. All this worry, all this frustration, it was because;

"I love you too"

Bucky's eyes widen in shock, and he makes his way to Sam slowly, Sam meeting him halfway. They stand mere inches away, looking into each other's eyes. "Yeah?" Bucky asks for clarification, though he already knows it's a yes. "Yeah" Sam breathes out, a small smile on his lips. "So I can kiss you?" Bucky asks, a smile on his face away, his anger melting away. "Definitely" and so he does.

They don't fight for the rest of the night, and Torres couldn't be happier that they're finally together.
