A/N: words: 873. Another request from AlphaWolf0215 thank you for these, even though they've both been late. Yes, that a big reason why this one is called overdue, and I'm proud of that. Anyway, mentions of drowning..? God, I need to get better at these. ANYWAY enjoy!

Sam threw the shield at another soldier, nameless bad guys trying to steal some intel from SWORD. That's when he heard a yelp and a splash. His eyebrows furrowed in confusion. He tried to reach Bucky on comms to ask him if he heard the noise too, but all he got was feedback. As he tossed the shield at the last of the soldiers, and turned to where Bucky was supposed to be. His stomach dropped.

He only ended up seeing the gun Bucky was holding at the shore line, and some soldiers swinging from a rope, being brought up to a jet. That wasn't the concern. Bucky wasn't there, but his gun was. Sam tore the wing pack off and dove into the water, thankful of the high tech Wakandan goggles. He could see clearly in the water, and there he could see the glimmer of black and gold in the water. It looked like they had taken him by surprise, lifting him off the ground and tossing him into the water. Sam swam through the water, becoming more anxious and worried by the second.

He saw how Bucky's body became limp, and Sam knew it was now or never, because he was almost out of breath himself. He grabbed onto Bucky's arm, dragging him to shore. It wasn't easy, carrying a super soldier from deep water, but somehow, Sam made it out from the water in the knick of time.

Sam gasped for air, dragging his body and Bucky's form from the muddy water and onto the shore. Sam laid Bucky down on the sand, searching his face for any signs of consciousness. "Buck, Buck, wake up." Sam pleaded, shaking the soaked body below him. Sam's breath became quick once again, and he shook his head. He wasn't gonna lose Bucky, not today. He braced himself for what he was about to do.

Sam tilted Bucky's chin a bit upwards and began the CPR, sending steady breaths into Bucky's mouth, desperate to see his eyes flutter open. His chest hasn't risen. Sam tried to stay as calm as he could, but that was starting to fade away. He pressed his hands to Bucky's chest, as small tears rolled down his cheeks, and began chest compressions.

After a few agonizing seconds, Sam watched Bucky's chest slowly rise and fall, and his eyes flutter open, wincing at the light he'd been greeted by. Sam sighed in relief, thankful to not have lost him. Bucky then began coughing horrendously. Sam would've been fun of him if Bucky hadn't almost died, and if Sam wasn't so relieved he could lift a car.

"Hey." Bucky said hoarsely, and Sam smiled. "Hi." Sam said, still wearing a smile. Bucky had sat up slightly with the help of Sam, and Sam couldn't be more thankful for the steel blue eyes shining in the light. "What, uh, happened?" Bucky inquired, rubbing his eyes. Sam chuckled softly and shook his head. "I think you almost drowned, by the look of you." Sam answered, and Bucky shot him a glare.

Then a playful and mischievous look overcame Bucky, and Sam got a bit concerned. "Yes?" Sam asked hesitantly, and Bucky smiled. "So, you're telling me our first kiss was because I almost drowned? Damn shame." and Sam froze. What he mean damn shame? Ok, yes, Sam had a tiny crush on the man in front of him, but it wasn't anything big. He used to be in pararescue, he gave people mouth to mouth all the time. So Bucky wasn't any different, right? Right.

Wrong. Sam saw Bucky's cocky smirk, saw the blush that arose from his neck as he said the words. He saw something in his eyes, not something he could place perfectly, but it was a genuine feeling. Sam got an idea. A crazy idea, but to be fair, he and Bucky almost died.

"Technically, it wasn't a kiss," Sam started, and Bucky was about to counter him, but Sam continued on, "I could over you a real one, if you'd like". Bucky turned bright red, but in spite of that, he sat him completely, leaning into Sam. "Yes, I would like that."

Their lips met. It wasn't flashy, it was gentle and soft, the taste of the water still on their lips. Sam lose grasp on Bucky's chin, pulling him closer. Bucky's hands snaked around Sam's waist. It was nice. A good start, Sam thought.

As they broke apart, their faces broke into giant smiles, and they rested their foreheads together. "That was..." Bucky trailed off, and Sam finished, "Overdue." Bucky chuckled softly at that. "Yeah. Too bad I almost drowned like 2 minutes ago, I'm sure the mood would've been better if I hadn't." Sam laughed at that, a genuine laugh, soft and easy, his hands sliding into Bucky's hands, comforting. "Yeah, we could've done without it." Sam agreed as he stood up slowly, pulling Bucky up with him.

They walked away from the beach hand in hand, the sun setting behind them. The mission was forgotten, not seeming that big concern. Torres would come and get them eventually. Right now, they watched the sunset in each other's arms, secure and safe. And overdue. Very overdue.
