A/N: words: 1176. This was sad. This was very sad. Um, yeah. There is death so like, warning. AnYwAyS, enjoy.

Bucky felt a searing pain in his stomach, then his shoulder. His entire body fell limp as he fell, and he could barely keep his eyes open. Sam's eyes widen, and he took off to Bucky's falling form. He shook his head. Not again.

As Sam sped up, his mind became foggy, his only thought was Bucky, Bucky flying through the air. The mission had left his mind. He was determined for this not to repeat, he couldn't. As Bucky practically hovered over the ground, Sam caught him. Sam hadn't noticed the tears on his cheek, he did notice the bullet holes littered over Bucky's body. "Buck" Sam choked out, his eyes wandering over Bucky's form. Bucky smiles softly, and by that, Sam could tell he knew it was the end. "Buck, the serum, it'll, I can, I can help," Sam told him, resting him on the ground, his wings shielding them from the rest of the world. Sam shook his head, sniffing softly. "Hey," Bucky said weakly, a small smile still on his face. Sam smiled down at him, while putting pressure on the wound. "Hi" Sam breathed out, looking for something to wrap the wounds with.

Sam didn't want to think what Bucky knew. This was the end, this was it. Sam didn't want to think of any of it, the upcoming wedding, the entire future they could build together, shot down. All crumbling in Sam's arms. All he wanted to do was sob. Sob and hold Bucky close, just a bit longer. Weep until he ran out of tears. "You remember the flower field?" Bucky mumbled, seeing Sam's expression, seeing the tears. Sam nodded and laughed weakly. "That's when I knew for certain I loved you" this is a goodbye, Sam thought, as Bucky stuttered out the words, still bleeding out. "But maybe I always loved you," Bucky added, and Sam wanted to burst into tears. "I've always loved you, too," Sam told him, tears threatening to fall.

"Sam, when I'm gone, take care of yourself, please" Bucky begged, and Sam knew he would try. He'd try to live as he did before, but both Bucky and Sam knew he couldn't. "Promise you'll save me a seat at our wedding" Bucky smiled up at Sam as the words left his mouth, and Sam almost broke down, again. The wedding. The ring shines in the light on the chain on Bucky's neck. A reminder of what was out of reach, for the both of them. "Of course, Jamie" Sam promised, nodding. Sam noticed Bucky's eyes slip close, and a surge of panic ran through Sam's body. "Hey, B, sweetheart, stay with me, for a bit longer" Sam all but pleaded, and Buck nodded weakly, opening his eyes once again, to his Sam Wilson. The love of his life, staring at him, looking like an angel in the light. "Sorry" Sam finally let the tears fall, as Bucky apologized. His mind went to Karli, her last words were 'sorry'. He hasn't gonna have that happen again.

"Remember the first time the boys called you 'Uncle Bucky'?" Sam asked, smiling at the memory. Bucky smiled as well, nodding. "I cried that day" Bucky admitted, and Sam's eyes softened. "It meant so much" Bucky continues, and Sam could see the genuine feeling and emotion that Bucky held in his eyes. "You mean a lot to them, too, you know" Sam told him, and Bucky, against all odds, rolled his eyes. "I would assume so, I'm marrying their uncle" Sam cracked a smile. Even here, inches away from death, Bucky made a snarky comment. It made Sam cry a bit more, as Bucky still uses 'marrying. Because Sam knows Bucky knows he's leaving, but Sam doesn't think Bucky knows what he's leaving, and for how long. Because when Bucky dies, both of them will miss out on their wedding day, the day they bring home a child, and another. They'll miss going to their nephew's graduations together. They'll miss the dumb impromptu dancing in the kitchen. The movie marathons. The late-night talks. Everything, being swept away from them, because of one time, one time they didn't peg a sniper. And this was the outcome. Sam let a few more tears fall into Bucky's form, and Bucky smiled sadly at him. "Sammy, I'm not worth crying over, ok? I promise," Bucky whispered, becoming weaker by the minute. Sam shook his head, crying still. "You're worth everything, hun" Sam told him, and he meant it. When Sam's on a mission without Bucky, he also knows Bucky will be home to see him, and then it's worth it. Now, Sam'll have nothing to come home to. No jumpy Bucky Barnes, with a bowl of soup and Star Wars marathon set up. No concerned Bucky Barnes when Sam gets hurt, fussing over him, carrying him to bed. No comforting words at 3 am after nightmares. No soft lips pressed to his foreheads as he cries. No strong arms to hold, just because you're very hold-able, Sam. None of that. Just a cold and empty void, where Bucky used to laugh and smile.

"Sam" Bucky called out weakly, and Sam nodded, urging him to continue. "I love you, so, so much" Sam cried, fully, sobbing, and he nodded. He wanted to be strong for Bucky, in his last moments, but that tore him apart. "I love you too, so, so much" Bucky smiled, and Sam wanted to keep that smile in his life forever. "I'm with you till the end of time, doll" and with that Bucky Barnes drew his last breath, and Sam Wilson collapsed. He held Bucky tight, sobbing into his cold, lifeless chest. The heart that would calm him to sleep, silent and still. The steel-blue eyes that had so much admiration, so much love, now cold and grey. Sam cried until he felt weak himself, and eventually let the medics take Bucky away, planting a soft kiss on his temple.

Sam moved to his sister's house as soon as he could, packing up everything in the apartment. He couldn't bear to stay there. The moment he walked through the door, he collapsed, seeing the pictures of him and Bucky everywhere. The kitchen in which they danced, the living room that they watched marathons in. The bedroom they shared, every step he took reminded him of Bucky, and how he wasn't gonna walk through the door with take-out, or the cat they also talked about getting. Everything in the apartment was a blaring reminder that Bucky, his James Buchanan Barnes, was gone. He didn't wanna forget about him, god no, he just missed him so much.

Even at Sarah's, it was bad. Everyone was grieving, and the house was silent, lacking the happy buzz Bucky brought with him. So, as the world would grieve the loss of the White Wolf, Sam sat in his bedroom, remembering his love, his fiancé, and his best friend, who has been ripped away from him far too soon.
