[SONG: YOU BELONG WITH ME by Taylor Swift]
As I sat across from Adrian, I couldn't help but feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. Everything seemed to click so far. But little did I know, there was a surprising twist waiting for me. My eyes still widened in surprise, and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Claire, my best friend, did not mention having a twin brother!
I exchanged a glance with Claire, and I could see the mixture of surprise and amusement on her face. Claire was trying to contain her laughter. It was a surreal moment, knowing that Claire and Adrian were siblings and that I was caught in the middle of this unexpected situation.
"Iylah, do you wanna go somewhere else?" Adrian says looking right into my eyes.
"Where? What's wrong in here?"
"Please. How about the riverside?" Adrian looks straight into my eyes and tries to convince me.
"Sure," I agreed after a second or two.
"Enjoy, you two! Just remember, I expect all the juicy details after the date. No holding back! Iylah, he's a gem and Adrian, that's my best friend so you better take this seriously," Claire laughs teasing her brother. As we hopped into Adrian's car, the engine hummed to life, filling the air with a familiar purr. The aroma of freshly brewed coffee still lingered, adding a cosy touch to the atmosphere. Adrian glanced at me with a mischievous smile, and I couldn't help but feel a sense of excitement for the journey ahead.
The car glided through the streets, the passing scenery a blur of colours and motion. Adrian's playlist played softly in the background. We didn't say a word but the silence wasn't awkward.
As we approached the riverside, the anticipation grew. Adrian parked the car, and we stepped out onto the path that led us closer to the water's edge. The sound of the flowing river greeted us, its gentle melody intertwining with our laughter. We took a moment to savour the picturesque view, the sun casting a golden glow on the rippling waves. We sat by the riverbank, the cool breeze brushed against my skin, offering a refreshing respite from the world.
I looked at him, trying to read his expression. He seemed a bit flustered, his cheeks slightly flushed.
He took a deep breath. 'It's beautiful, the view," Adrian said softly breaking the silence.
"It is," I added. "I had no idea Claire had a twin brother. I couldn't even think of you being her twin in my wildest dream. What a small world!"
"She forgets to mention that a lot," Adrian said mocking his sister. "I'm older though."
"I'm really glad that you two have such a strong bond," he added after a pause. "I'll give you a headstart, she's crazy."
"No, she is just excited and happy."
"Headstart"
It started with a subtle giggle but soon escalated into uncontrollable fits of laughter. At that moment, all my worries and troubles melted away, replaced by pure joy and the shared camaraderie of laughter. As if my troubles were dissipated, carried away by the flowing river. The rhythmic lapping of the water against the rocks provided a soothing melody, inviting me to embrace the present moment.
As we continued our conversation, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. It was clear that he genuinely cared about my feelings. We laughed, shared stories, and slowly the initial tension melted away.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm golden glow across the water, a sense of tranquillity settled. We marvelled at the beauty of the landscape, feeling a deep connection to the world around us. In that peaceful riverside scene, I discovered a moment of serenity and a reminder that sometimes life can be messy but with the right company, it's worth living.
The drive back home was fun. We sang along to Taylor Swift.
Soon he pulls out his car in front of my home.
"Here we are." He announces softly turning off the music.
"Adrian." I stopped him before he could undo his seat belt and rush out to hold the door for me. "I enjoyed every second with you."
I slowly undo my seat belt and kissed him on the cheek. His skin is so soft and cold. His expression changes into surprise and he freezes at the moment for a second. He takes his time and rushes out to hold the door for me. He takes my hand and kisses it softly. Goosebumps grew all over my body. A sudden charge of electricity rushes in my veins. We didn't say a word. Our smiles can tell it all. He tells me to be ready. He'll pick me up tomorrow at 7 in the morning. We exchange goodnights and move on to our ways. I can't wait for tomorrow.
