2nd April 2020

Truth to be told, I am still guilt-ridden. Even though I somehow cleared that debt, my shoulders still carry the weight of that night.

Every time I saw Akash, the weight of the news just increased. Guilt came down crashing on me, taunting me of what I had done. That night, I didn't sleep. The whole night, I kept staring at the stars, wishing I could go back in time.

That night the wind was blowing furiously. Even though I was shivering, I didn't get up. My mind was now repeating something else, it is all your fault. Maybe it was.

Hugging my legs to my chest, I spent the entire night in the same position. At some point, I must have been crying, as my cheeks were sticky in the morning. Radhika found me sitting near the riverside. Yellow tapes that marked it a crime scene, were all over the place. I sat a few miles away from it, yet still far away from the camp.

Radhika yelled at me, her entire face red. She said that she hated me for getting her so worried. She almost thought that like Sanjhana, I was also--

But whatever she said bounced off me. I didn't even care. Looking back, I should have thanked her for bringing a shawl. She dragged me back to the camp. Later, I was told everyone was searching for me.

Teachers screamed at me for running away like that. Akash looked at me, disappointment lurking in his eyes. I still didn't care. So filled with self-hate, guilt and shock, I almost wished I also had died with Sanjhana.

Now, I am glad I didn't. Because the next day, I found a letter that Sanjhana had written the night she died.
