The Dark Ember

Losing Hayley

She took us home and said "Klaus!" he flashed down and said "Caroline, Em? And boy? To what do I owe the pleasure?" I said, "Dad, his name is Kaleb and he is my friend leave him alone." Caroline said "Hope is missing." he said, "What do you mean, Hope's missing?" Caroline said "A few hours ago, she took off with a boy from school." he said "What?" I said, "She wants to bind herself to save mom." Caroline said "We're looking for them. In fact, our entire Honors Tracking class is on it." he said "Who's this boy? I'm gonna kill him." she said "We can't pinpoint their location yet, but they seem to be heading somewhere just outside of New Orleans. We do know she is currently ok because Ember can sense her still." dad said "So she's coming home. Why?" she said "You can ask her when we find her. Let's go."

We stopped for drinks at Mammy's Kitchen, Caroline said "They just texted. My tracking class should be zeroing in on them. We should have a location nailed down any minute." dad said, "So what, we just wait here and sip rancid diner coffee?" Caroline said "Or you can think about what you'll say when you see Hope. Or more importantly, what you won't say. It'll be tempting to lash out, but you'll regret it later." he said "You know, you have a lot to answer for, and not just for losing one of my daughters." Caroline said "She's not lost..." he said "After all your haranguing. "Be a better father, become more engaged." she said "I refute "harangue." I am not a haranguer. I gave constructive advice." he said "Which I heeded at my own peril. And the girls didn't make it any easier." she said "They're not eight years old anymore. They don't have to look up to you now just because you're their dad. You have to earn it."

He said "You know, the truth be told, it's been bloody awful. I mean, it was bad enough when I had to keep my distance, but now, the desire to keep them close, to-to protect them, the constant worry. I've never known such pain. I want to hold them and I can't hold her because her darkness is attracted to the Hollow in me and I cant hold Hope because the hollow wants to take her over." she said "Well, congratulations. You just became a father." I said "I thought you became a father 15 years ago?" he looked at me and said "Just as she became a truant. Why? Why would she do this? Why must you be a smartass?" I said "To make you all love me more of course." he said, "We love you so much there is no way to possibly love you more." Caroline said "It's pretty basic. Some girls just like the bad boys. The more sheltered they are, the more likely it is." 

Dad said "You say that like it's inevitable. It's not a rite of passage." I giggled as she said "Oh, for some girls it is. It was for me. If there was a bad boy within a five-mile radius, I would find him. And some were even way too old for me." he said "Well. I'm sure some had very... pure intentions." they both said "Maybe." I said, "Gross, Hope, and I read enough of that love story in your memoirs we don't need a live showing." Caroline said "Oh. My tracking class failed. But we have our location." he said "How?" she said "Find My iPhone. Let's go." We drove to the location and got out, I picked up her phone from the ground and said "Not surprising." I crossed my arms and looked at dad he said, "Why would she toss her phone?" I said, "So we can't find her, because she forgets I exist." Caroline said, "What are you talking about?" I said, "The Hollow linked us as kids, aunt Freya unlinked us but I can still use the residue to find her, the reason I didn't mention this earlier is that it involves using more of the darkness than I have since the hollow took us and I don't know if I can pull myself back from that." 

Kaleb said "I got you girl." dad said "No we will not make you do this." as Caroline said, "Last time you pushed it too far you killed someone hun, and remember how that made you feel." I said, "I know I just want to save my sister." Caroline said, "Are you sure?" I nodded and sat on the ground, she laid a map in front of me and handed me a dagger. Dad said, "This cannot be happening, why don't you and your sister ever listen to me?" I sliced my hand open and said "Because you and mom told us how we were supposed to be worth all your sacrifices and we are only trying to live up to it. Now. Phasmatos Tribum Nas Ex Veras, Sequita Saguines, Ementas Asten Mihan Ega Petous." As I chanted the spell effectively silencing everyone I also dug really deep into my soul to connect with as much darkness as I could hold onto and projected it into my spell to locate my sister. The line of blood traveled until it stopped in the middle of nowhere. 

 I let go of the spell then stood up and started to walk in that direction, I wasn't myself and I knew it, dad said "Hey Em where are you going?" I ignored him and he grabbed my arm making me swing my arm making him fly and said "Ah sha Lana!" making him groan in pain as I gave him an aneurysm. Arms wrapped around me and forced me to the ground, Kaleb said "Let go! Let it go Ember!" he just kept repeating himself and my body tried to fight him off, while I was trying to release the darkness. It was a battle, my dad was growling because his head hurt, Caroline was trying to help him, I was screaming trying to get free from both Kaleb and the darkness and Kaleb was relentless with epic strength. 

Kaleb distracted me by pinning me to the ground which lifted the spell on my dad, Kaleb said "Emmy you need to breathe and let it go. Release the darkness. Remember what Emma said... You need to show it you are stronger. Take control, Emmy. Take control." the darkness receded to its little box and I started to cry. Kaleb pulled me up and hugged me, I said "Maybe I am broken." Kaleb rubbed my back "Who said you were broken?" I said "My dad." who said, "Emberlyn, honey you are not broken, you are a child, MY child, you are still learning and you are doing really well." I cried more "Im sorry Daddy, I'm sorry for hurting you." dad said "Caroline can you..." she said "Of course." and pulled me into a mom hug. She said "It's ok Ember, it's progress, you didn't kill anyone this time. Your learning and growing. Now let's go save your sister and your momma." I nodded and let Kaleb pull me up. We got back in the car and started to drive.

As we drove Freya called saying she found mom, which was the same location as Hope. Once we got there Kaleb and I ran into the building, Mom was there, Greta was there, Roman was there, and Hope was knocked out on the ground. Kaleb and I crouched by my sister's side and I said "Mom?" Roman said, "But you said if they just bound her werewolf side." Greta said "Klaus Mikaelson was bound, but found a way to break it. There are always loopholes. And we cannot afford any more hybrids." Roman said "What the hell did you do to her? Hope? Hope?" I said, "Roman what the hell did you do?" Greta said "It's easier for her this way. If it is known they weren't still linked the sister would be asleep too." Roman said, "I don't understand what's happening." Greta said "If we want peace, we cannot allow an apex predator to exist. You know in your heart this is the right thing to do. Show me you believe." mom said "Roman, you don't have to do this. They're not werewolves or hybrids, they're your friends, and you care about them. I know you do."

Roman said "Please, Mom, please, don't make me do this. Please, don't..." she said, "Give that to me!" Roman screamed "Mother, no!" dad and Elijah burst inside and mom called out "Elijah." he stabbed dad and said "Roman. Are you okay?" I screamed "Dad!" Greta stabbed her hand in my mom's chest making me scream "No! Mom!" she looked at dad, then at me and Hope and said "Ember, My little girl, I love you and I love your sister, promise me you will do everything your heart desires, promise me you will never stop fighting, that you will always stay true to yourself and loyal to your sister. Promise me you will follow your heart, ask your crush out, don't live on fear instead be brave and fly and remember I will always love you and your sister. Em, promise me." I was crying but I said "I love you, mommy, I promise." she ripped Great's finger off effectively taking the daylight ring away, and rushed them both outside, where they immediately started to burn in the sunlight. Dad and I screamed "NO!" I ran outside with Kaleb right behind me, I went to grab my mom but Kaleb pulled me back as I screamed, "No! Mommy! Don't leave me alone! I need you!" Roman blew something in my face making me pass out.
