Onyx 🤐
I woke up with a large headache. My first thought: I hate my life.It was true. I did. Living in a foster family wasn't exactly the best experience, but it kept me alive.
My life couldn't possibly get any worse, right?
Wrong.
I was being forced by my "mom" to go on a field trip to the museum.
I groaned and rolled off my bed with a thump.
But I did my morning routine.
I showered and got dressed in a white graphic t-shirt, blue denim shorts, a pastel pink belt with a gold buckle on it, and some white converse.
I stood in front of my mirror, admiring my naturally tan skin, as I was Filipino.
I tried for a smile, but it looked forced. I just rolled my eyes and muttered to myself, "What the hell am I thinking?"
I grabbed some round white acrylic sunglasses, walked out my room and just strolled out the door without a goodbye to my fake family.
I got on my bike and rode to school.
When I arrived at school, I greeted my Japanese friend, Okemia. I waved to her and she waved back.
"Hi, Okemia."
"Hey! How's life?"
I scowled. "Horrible. You?"
She shrugged. "I had tea yesterday and read some magazines. Pretty laid back."
Before we could talk more, we went to class because it was almost time.
I got in first, and that was when I spotted Kendra Williams, strutting in with her gleaming chocolate colored skin and well-put together outfit.
I wrinkled my nose. She was smart, but way too much of a troublemaker.
I wanted to get noticed, but not like that. And plus, if she wanted to be seen, why be rude to people?
Some humans just didn't make sense. After all the bustling, we sat in our seats and the teacher started taking attendance.
The teacher looked down her nose at me.
"Onyx Sulu?" I raised my hand and gave her a small smile.
"Here." She gave me a half smile, which I guess was just to be pleasant.
I guessed she felt disgusted by me. She told us the rules about the field trip, saying that we would be put into groups of four, one group wouldn't have a chaperone, and no stopping during the ride.
Hm, seemed pretty straightforward to me. I went to the loo and met up with the rest of the excited class outside.
I joined Okemia and sat next to her on the bus.
No one else wanted to sit with us, but that was fine by me.
Okemia rolled her eyes at me.
"You say you want to have a mark on the world, so why are you so quiet? You really need to socialize more, Onyx!"
I tightened my lips. "Uhh, maybe later. Or next time. Or in a couple of years?" She slapped my arm playfully.
"You are hopeless."
The ride there was pretty uneventful, and I just daydreamt. Then, our bus slowed to a stop.
We had arrived at the wonderful museum everyone was so psyched to be at.
