Thanks for 17K! I never would've expected this many views from this story!

Today was the day. Steven had just informed me that the construction of the drill has been complete and how he and the other Gems were ready to confront whatever the "Cluster" was. He didn't give me much information, as we either got sidetracked or he was too much in a rush to explain all the details. But long story short, it was something deadly that lived in the Earth's core. The very thought of the cluster under my feet as I walked on the footpath made me weary. I wanted to help, but he was being really stubborn about it. Worried that I would get hurt, or it would be too dangerous or he would feel better if I just focused on school. I tried my best not to argue with him, as I could use a few simple, normal days to myself. Ever since I met Steven, I don't even know if the definition of those words still holds up. I took my time getting into school, as I knew I would arrive on time.

However, I wasn't able to get far before a splitting pain erupting through my head as my movements came to a stop. I felt it coursing through my mind once again.

I clutched my eyes shut as I felt the pain get stronger, "No, no, no! Not again--!!".

"Please! You have to let me see him!".

A man that stood in front of me pinched the bridge of his nose when he heard the sobbing. His body was facing towards his car as if he was desperate to jump in and drive away. He grunted, "Maybellene! I'm sick of hearing this--!".

"Mable! Never Maybellene! Even when he's sick, you won't let me see him! He needs me!".

"It's more than a ten-hour drive to reach him. We simply don't have the time! He has another family looking after him. You just want an excuse to miss your lessons!", the man counter-yelled at me with a harsh, thunderous voice.

"That's not it at all! I just want my brother! You promised two months ago we would pass by his residents, and we didn't!".

The man narrowed his eyes and balled his fingers into a fist. He spoke, brusquely, "That's just how life is sometimes! He should be the last thing on your mind! Focus on your schoolwork rather than getting angry at something you can't do anything about!".

I recovered consciousness to hear the sound of a car driving away. I held my hand against the wall to balance myself, as my legs felt almost too weak to support me. When my eyes drooped up, I saw Mable, gloomily trotting to the entrance of the school. I could tell she was breathing heavily and her cheeks were burning red from rage. However, at the same time, she looked so miserable. She was constantly wiping tears from the side of her eyes as her bottom lip quivered. I approached her quietly and gradually, noticing the small sniffles escaping her mouth.

I didn't know why, but I felt a little bad for her. "Uh, Mable?", I whispered her name.

She let out a tiny gasp, as her head whipped around with an expression of shame written on her face. That was until she realised it was me.

Her brows narrowed, but she looked less intimidating and more pitiful. "What do you want?", she croaked, turning her head away so that I presumably couldn't see her crying.

"Nothing", I responded, nonchalant to her attitude towards me. "I just...wanted to know if you were ok".

A look of bitterness swept onto her face, "Why do you care? Why are you even talking to me?!".

I was starting to get slightly irritated that she was raising her voice at me, but I had to remember what I had just seen. "Listen, I didn't have to ask! I just saw you crying and thought--".
