I had gotten a call earlier from 6 worried children about my boyfriend not showing up today to "babysit" them. Right after I hung up the phone, I quickly hopped in my little 70s dodge and sped off to my boyfriend's house.
It took about 15 minutes to get there since he was all the way across town from my house. As usual, the front door was unlocked, and Steve's parents were nowhere to be seen. I grabbed the spiked bat on the entry table just in case and then continued up to Steve's room. I took the stairs two at a time then slowly pushed Steve's door open when I arrived.
I quietly padded into the room, quickly picking up on the pained whines emitting from beneath the bedsheets. I walk over to my boyfriend after concluding he was sick by his unruly hair, flushed, yet pale face, and the steady shiver racking his body. I knew he got really clingy when sick, so I carefully lift the blankets and lay down next to him.
Steve wastes no time cuddling into my side, looking for my comfort in his vulnerable moment, he clearly felt like shit. "Do you want me to rub your back?" Steve shook his head, unable to even imagine trying to roll over. Let alone trying to put pressure on his stomach, which was the main issue.
"How about your stomach? You gotta talk to me Hunny, please I have no idea what's wrong."
"Stomach," he gasped, snatching my hand and using his little strength to press my palm to the mentioned spot. I began rubbing gentle circles across the sickly organ just as asked, Steve curling around my touch.
"Try and get some sleep, it'll help you get better," I urged, I could tell by the dark circles under his eyes that he hadn't gotten any rest recently and if he had, it was a very little amount. I continued tracing my hands on my boyfriend's stomach until his breathing softened and evened out. Once he was asleep, I moved my hands from his stomach to his ratty hair. I gently combed my fingers through it, getting as many knots out as I could without hurting him or waking him up.
I continued running my hands through his hair for about an hour, stopping when Steve woke up again. He mumbled something that I couldn't quite hear before running out of his room, me not far behind. Just as expected, he ran straight for the bathroom, quickly lifting the toilet lid and falling to his knees in front of it. I rubbed comforting circles on his back as the little bit that he had eaten came back up, staining to water a gross colour.
Once Steve's stomach was empty, I handed him a glass of water to rinse his mouth out and drink a little, then helped him back into his bed. I ran back to the bathroom to grab a cool cloth and flush the toilet. I return to my sick boyfriend and place the cold cloth on his fevered forehead, also pushing the trash bin from the corner to his bedside within reach.
After I was done gathering all my supplies, I once again lift up the covers and lay down next to Steve, letting him cuddle into me again. Annoyingly enough, ten minutes later I heard the loud blaring of Steve's phone. I carefully slide out of his grasp and run to the kitchen to answer the phone before it wakes my boyfriend.
It was the kids wondering if they could come over and visit/check on Steve. I of course said yes as long as they kept it short and were respectful. A half-hour later I heard a frantic knock on the door and opened it, knowing it was the kids. Dustin zipped past me under my arm and straight to Steve's room, making me laugh a bit, the others not far behind.
I took my time walking back to the bedroom so the kids could have a few minutes with Steve. Once I finally got there, I saw the kids sprawled across various furniture, with Dustin standing next to the bed doing a full check of my now awake boyfriend. I stood in the doorway for a minute until Dustin stepped back, satisfied with the fact that Steve wasn't going to spontaneously waste away then walked into the room, returning to my previous position before the phone rang.
For the third time, Steve curled into my side and I resumed detangling his hair. The kids stayed for another 15 minutes before leaving on their bikes. As soon as they left, Steve's facade fell and he looked exhausted. I urged him to get some sleep promising I'd still be here when he woke up. Within minutes, he was out cold, and just as promised, I stayed put.
