DEVYN POV

The sun blazes outside as I take in the humidity. I sit on the steps taking another dab at my cigarette and then I crush it under my foot. The door behind me creaks open. I know exactly who it is without even needing to turn around.

"You don't even have to say my name I know the sound of you anywhere." I say as I turn around to meet Andrea leaning against the pole.

"Hmm, am I that loud?"

"No, not at all. Now that I think about it, you're completely silent. You make no noise, no sound. You're fast, agile, and silent... almost like an assassin." I walk towards her until I reach the pole across from her.

"Assassin huh? That's a first." She chuckles.

"Mhmm, what if you're here to kill me?"

"That would be quite easy..."

"Really?"

"Yeah." There's a moment of silence as we stare at each other, and then we both burst out laughing.

"How are you?" Andrea asks.

"I'm okay, thanks for asking." She nods her head and looks down at her shoes while biting down on her bottom lip.

"I-"

"I didn't tell anyone." I say before she could finish her sentence.

"I didn't either."

"Good. It didn't mean anything anyways so don't sweat it. Nothing happened."

"Yeah, right. Glad to know we're on the same page." She gives me a half smile. My jaws clench at that.

"Do you think we can still be friends?" She asks while looking up at me. My heart flutters.

"Um, yeah I don't see why not?"

"I don't know I just thought I had to say it."

"Yeah, no.. friends. I love friends." I wanted to punch myself for being so awkward.

"Thanks. Well, I should head back in." She slides her hands into her pockets and walks to the door. I turn around, patting down my pants to look for my lighter.

"Dev?" I turn around to her again.

"Yeah?"

"Stop smoking. Smoking kills." She says with a smirk.

"Not if you kill me first right?" She shakes her head and heads inside. I look down at the new cigarette in my hand. I slowly put it back in the box. She called me Dev. Smiling to myself, I kick a pebble nearby. No matter how much I've tried to hate her, to stay away from, I always find myself back to her. I have no idea why she has this effect on me, but now I don't care anymore. If she wants to be friends, I can be friends. At least that way, she'll still be a part of my life somehow. Sitting back down, I get a flashback from the wedding. Everything comes rushing back. How her lips felt on mine. How her skin burned against mine. I quickly shake away the thought. I need to let it go, maybe she's the one that got away for me. Plus, I have to worry about my father right now, and getting the highest ranking. I can't detour from my goals anymore.
