My mind goes over the last few hours. It goes over last night as my every senses still holds on to the smell of her warmth. The feeling of her soft skin on mine.
I still remember and I can't seem to concentrate as our friends start their walk out on the streets. The rest of us are in the Lab while the presidential folks are where they belong.
But Adeline belongs with me. After all of this, at last I can hold her.
Before they left the house after Alexander gave them their instructions and invisible earpieces, Adeline took my arm and pulled me aside. Her eyes had a gentle fire in them as she whispered, "You need to stay alive, Sam. I know you're a leader but...there's people behind you that need you."
My heart melted at her warmth. It always does whenever our eyes meet among the darkness. And just as we were under the staircase, our fire ignited among the shadows. I took her face and burned a kiss at her soft lips. Her hands ran up my shoulders just like that night and came closer so I could hold her. That was all I needed to keep my head up.
With one last hand squeeze, we shared a small smile and I watched her walk off. Everyone still gave her angry eyes, but they do not see what I see. So as she took one last look at my eyes among all those daggery looks, I gave her a wink. She knew that I'd come back to her. Even if the world angrily disapproves.
She stepped out and I missed her already. Dom, of course, interrupted my thoughts as he firmly stood in front of me. That fire in his eyes shot at me as he said, "Don't tell me she tricked you into it, Sam. Not you."
"I don't know what you're talking about," I said as I went into the living room.
But before I could step in with the others, Dom angrily took my shoulder and strongly pushed me towards the dining room. In there, he put me against the wall and angrily pointed at me.
"Don't you dare let her ruin our mission just for a set of kisses, Sam."
The same fire he had in his eyes set in my veins at his words. I wanted to slam him against the wall and give him a strong beating. But I just steadied my angry breaths and pushed him to the side. I gave him a quick glare before walking off. That's enough for him to know to not tell me what to do.
They will never see what I see in her.
But they've gone out now. Dom no longer has his eyes on me with that angry look. Now they watch a blue dot on our screen. Nikki. They went off for a moment to say goodbye. I don't understand why they all say goodbye in a way like they will all die.
I won't let that happen.
Alexander and Cristina keep their eyes on the screen while they keep the camera system under our control. They only have an hour.
Nerves try to come at me but I remember Adeline's firm words. Her strength gives me the strength to turn to those that have stayed behind and firmly say, "Alright. They've just turned the corner. Soon they will be entering that building as students. No matter what happens, we stay alert. You listen to my commands first and obey. I don't want anyone trying to do anything stupid. That goes for you, Dom."
Dom clenches his jaw and I hear him say under his breath, "Says the man sleeping with the enemy."
I tolerate his words once again. There's no need to fight each other now. After the mission, I'll get him.
Everyone nods and my parents turn in their seats to give me a small smile. In Alexander's eyes, I see that pride of a father and I let it be. Since I've let Adeline's warmth envelop me, I let my heart experiment with these warm feelings for once.
