The day of the alpha's visit has arrived and, following my father's orders, my mother has straightened my unruly curls down into a tidy mess. I miss my curls, they give me character and now I feel like I'm missing a part of me.
Glorious, tempting apples have begun to ripen on the tree by my window. The temptation is too much. Feeling like Eve, I clamber out of my window and scurry along tiles before clambering into the embrace of the branches.
I eat an apple or two, hungry after only having a few stolen crackers for meals this week. Then, I watch as my father and brothers leave the house below me, I'm so small and silent they don't even notice me. So much for being a smart wolf.
Chuckling, I go to clamber down, intending on collecting a few apples for mother to enjoy, when I hear a crack in the woodland by our house.
Freezing, I turn my nose to the air and sniff once. Hopelessly, even if there was someone or something there I wouldn't be able to pick it up. There are too many other scents confusing my wolf. Instead I turn my eyes to the woods, scanning the tree line.
Our house is closes to the pack boundary as one of my father's roles is to check up on this side of the perimeter. I'm sure the strange noise was just one of the warriors doing his rounds... and yet my gut doesn't agree.
Frowning, I shrink back against the tree stump, praying that whatever it is, it can't see me.
"You know I can see you right?"
Shit, well there goes that plan.
I freeze, still not moving.
The figure moves from the tree line and I can see him now. He's tall, taller than any wolf in my pack. His smell hits me now as he moves over to stand under the tree I'm hiding up, he's not from our pack.
"What are you doing here!" I exclaim, my eye dart to look over to my open window. Could I reach it before he grabs me?
"What are you doing up there?" He replies, looking up at me with a lazy smile on his face.
" I asked first."
"True true, you did."
He pauses, my gaze doesn't move from his face. I should be frightened, but I'm not, I can tell that this is alright.
"I'm going to be here officially in an hour or so anyway. I wanted to get a scope for the pack, I didn't expect to see a wolf up a tree."
A small scoff like laugh escapes me, a wolf in a tree, that's a funny image. Reaching up again, I pick another apple and take a bite. The juice runs down my chin and I quickly wipe it away before the man can see it.
"Are the apples good?"
"Mmmhhhmm." I grin before I taking another bite of my apple and choosing one to throw down to him.
