I can't believe that Tobias actually bought me a kitten, I put that on the list as a joke, as a far cry to what I could ever dream of and yet here I am laying in bed with a tiny creature sleeping on my chest.
His tiny paws flex and curl as I rub his belly. Living here with Tobias has been a dream and I never want to leave this place, I never want to leave him. One day, I hope to find the strength and the words to tell him that, to tell him I want to spend every day until we grow old together but I can't say it. Not yet, the fear of him rejecting my feelings wins out against all.
After spending a great deal of time deciding on a name for the little kitten, I settled on Inky. He has black fur and huge green eyes and the way he lays on the bed with the fur spreading out on the white blanket looks like ink in water.
When I told Tobias he laughed at me kindly and ruffled my hair before he ruffled the kitten's ears. We ate dinner together in the firelight and then we decided to go to bed. I was exhausted as I haven't been sleeping well the last few nights, something has been pulling me to Tobias and it gets harder to resist at night, but resist it I must.
As the curtain of night falls heavier, I miss Tobias even more, I'm just trying to be strong.
Even though I know he isn't my mate, I can't help feeling hopeful that maybe we're made for each other without the moon goddess' intervention. And that one day we will both find the words to describe how we feel, or maybe Tobias doesn't feel the same and this is just me being delusional.
Sighing and full of depressing thoughts, I roll over, accidentally dislodging Inky in the process making him meow plaintively. Apologising, I kiss his head and place him under my chin.
I doze in and out of sleep but something seems to be keeping me up from deep sleep. At first I brush it off, assuming it's just me wanting to be next to Tobias but after a while it starts to feel different.
Finally, I realise why I'm being kept awake. From the next room I can hear Tobias whimpering and calling out in pain.
Before I even have a chance to hesitate, I'm out of bed and pulling one of Tobias' hoodies over my head. Just before I leave the room, I make sure briefly that Inky is safe on the bed before I leave him and head to the next room.
When I see Tobias' door is shut I hesitate for a moment until I hear Tobias crying out again, this time with my name on his lips.
Without another thought, I open the door and dash into the room.
"Tobias." I call out gently as I find him thrashing wildly in his bed with tears streaking down his cheeks. He looks agonised and fearful.
