the next day it seemed that it was hyunjae's turn to feel low. even getting out of bed that morning felt like an impossible task which was highly unusual for him. he couldn't even gain the energy to click on his phone and check juyeon's messages no matter how much the younger boy was usually the only thing that could make him feel any better.
maybe it was their connection as best friends or simply just how long they had known each other but as the clock ticked to 7:45am (15 minutes before hyunjae was supposed to leave) the sound of keys in the door echoed through the otherwise silent house.
after a second, hyunjae heard the door open and close again before a very loud and worried voice sounded out from the hallway, "hyunjae? are you awake?"
it was juyeon, of course it was. hyunjae was convinced that juyeon had a 6th sense that allowed him to just know when he was upset. there had hardly ever been a day where hyunjae wasn't feeling well that juyeon didn't turn up at his door in the morning.
"yeah i'm awake," he replied quietly yet he still didn't turn over the face the other boy.
"and are you alright?" juyeon's voice asked again. hyunjae let the question hang in the air for a while as he thought of the best way to answer.
"i don't know," he responded truthfully, "i'm not sure if i'm having a bad day for some reason or if it will just get better when i've woken up a bit."
juyeon hummed slightly in response before sitting himself down on the side of hyunjae's bed and reaching over to push the hair from the older's face. hyunjae took this opportunity to roll over so he could face his best friend.
when he looked up, he was met with a juyeon who looked wildly concerned. admittedly, it wasn't often that hyunjae had a down day but juyeon looked as if hyunjae had just told him he was moving away and never returning.
"hey," hyunjae spoke to get the boy to lift his head and meet his eyes once again.
"i'll be fine in a few hours, it's probably because i was up really late doing the maths homework," hyunjae admitted but still this didn't seem to put juyeon at ease.
"you should've called me and i would've helped," he spoke in return with a small pout that hyunjae found completely adorable.
the older shook his head with a small smile at juyeon's response, "don't worry it's fine i'm sure being around you will be enough to cheer me up anyway."
juyeon seemed to light up at this before nodding slightly and speaking again, "i'll just have to stay with you all day then."
true to his word, juyeon stayed basically attached to hyunjae at the hip all morning. he picked out his outfit for him, prepared him a quick breakfast, was late for school because hyunjae wanted a coffee and he didn't want to let him go alone, hyunjae couldn't have asked for any more from juyeon than what he gave.
when they finally arrived, their teacher hardly said a word about them being late considering how unusual it was. it was one of the benefits of doing well in school, hyunjae supposed, there were things that he and juyeon could get away with that many other people definitely couldn't.
"are you alright with the work?" juyeon asked him a few minutes after they had been given their physics worksheets and hyunjae positively looked like he wanted to cry.
"i have no clue," the older replied frustratedly. for some odd reason, his brain was simply refusing to cooperate. hyunjae was talented in physics, if anything it was probably the subject he excelled in. no matter how hard the formula or the equation, he hardly ever found himself stuck so it was beyond him why he was struggling with a simple half life equation.
