Masaya "Well..."
How long has it been since Masaya has said that?
What felt like an eternity must have been a few seconds.
I slowly tighten the grip of my clenched hands.
Masaya "It's simple... Because you were there that day."
Kana "So then, Masaya, if I hadn't been assigned to your wedding..."
Masaya "I probably wouldn't have asked you."
(I am a fool...I shouldn't have expected any other answer but that.)
He averts his gaze. His lips form a small smile as he stares down towards the ground.
This is the proof that I have lost my gamble.
Kana "I see, of course..."
Masaya "What did you expect? Well, regardless of how we met, I..."
Kana "I understand."
I stand up, cutting him off.
Masaya, with a quizzical expression on his face, stands up and looks me in the eye.
Masaya "I'm still in the middle of talking, you know?"
Kana "It's alright. I'm fine."
Masaya "What do you mean you're fine?"
Kana "I understand. I understand how you feel, Masaya."
Masaya "What's gotten into you?"
Kana "I have something to tell you, Masaya..."
Masaya "I'm sorry I didn't contact you."
Kana "It's not that..."
Masaya "I don't usually make promises, but I'll keep it next time."
(The reason there is a next time...is because I'm playing the role of his wife. As for Masaya, well, he's being careless. For all he knows, I could go rogue on him. He's probably not even taking that into consideration...)
Masaya "I'll do my best so that I don't hurt you again."
In an attempt to apologize in his own way, Masaya gives me a reserved smile.
(No... I can't let myself fall for it. I have to keep his intentions in mind.)
However, just before they can make contact... I brush his hand away.
Masaya "...?!"
From the day we met, my feelings towards him have changed drastically. However, Masaya's feelings have not changed at all. This is all, for him, steps towards inheriting the company.
(In all honesty, he did nothing wrong. I knew from the beginning what I was getting myself into. I knew the terms. But still...)
Kana "I want to end this."
Masaya "Huh...?"
Kana "I can no longer continue pretending."
I've finally said it. The moment I say it, I am attacked by the feelings of regret. However, there is no turning back now. Masaya sighs in a troubled fashion. He sits on the sofa, gazing upward. Then, as if something has occurred to him, he lowers his gaze towards me.
Masaya "Did anyone say anything, by any chance?"
(My note: Way to go Masaya, you are sharp.)
(He's sharp about things like this.)
