Summer of 1998
June
Rebecca Chambers looked up at the huge building that stood before her. The Raccoon City Police Department. She was recruited to be part of their Special Tactics and Rescue Service, or their S.T.A.R.S. team. Fresh out of college, a prodigy of only 18 years old, she was picked for her talents in chemistry.
She honestly felt a bit like a fish out of water. The S.T.A.R.S. team had been put together two years prior, and she was afraid her stepping in like this would throw off whatever delicate balance the rest of the members had with each other. She shook her head, quickly letting those thoughts slip away. They wouldn't have picked her if she wasn't qualified for the job, right?
She was told only briefly of what she would be doing at the RPD. The whole point of S.T.A.R.S. was to deal with the increased threat of terrorism, combining soldiers and scientists together. In a tight spot, they were an emergency crew. Rebecca was to be a medic, and placed on one of the teams in S.T.A.R.S. She learned she had to go through combat training, since she had virtually no experience with that sort of stuff. Beyond that she had no idea what she was getting herself into.
Rebecca looked to the doors, and saw a man walking out. He was wearing a regular RPD uniform, with short hair and an aged look. He made eye contact with her and gave her a face that could only be described as confusion,
"Are you lost?" He called across to her. Rebecca felt anxiety wash over her, and looked down at her clothes. She was just in a t-shirt and jeans, since she hadn't gotten a uniform yet. Of course she just looked like a weirdo civilian creeping around the police station. She cleared her throat,
"N-No sir!" She cleared it again, taking a pause before speaking, like she rehearsed what she was about to say,
"My name is Rebecca Chambers sir! I'm the newest member of S.T.A.R.S." the man's face lit up,
"Oh! Well why didn't you say so? Come over here, I'll show you the way." Rebecca felt her chest relax. Thank God he was friendly. She hurriedly walked over to him, and up the stairs to the big double doors of the RPD. He opened them again and let her go in first.
She was met by the biggest police lobby she'd ever seen.
Granted, she hadn't been in very many.
But wow it was huge. A desk sat in the middle of the room, littered with papers, a computer or two and... was that a typewriter? Rebecca was quickly distracted by the fact that the lobby had two staircases going up the second floor, and a giant statue in the middle of the place.
Okay, she would definitely be getting lost in here. The police officer who had helped her inside was looking at her with a kind smile,
"I know it's a lot to take in." He said, and then held out his hand to her,
"I'm Marvin by the way. Marvin-"
"Branagh!" A booming voice came from the back of the lobby. Marvin cringed, his shoulders nearly up to his ears,"Yeah, that's my last name." He looked over to the left staircase to see a big man bounding down the stairs toward him. Rebecca recognized this guy from the news.
Chief Brian Irons. Rebecca immediately straightened her posture and saluted him.
"What is it, Irons?" Marvin asked, as Irons finally made it over to them.
"Do I pay you to sit around chatting it up? I could hear you from the library." There was a library in this place? Marvin sighed, like he had had this conversation a million times,
